How important is it to a fighter? Like Boxers, Martial Artists, MMA practitioners, and such.
about as important as it is a weakness. If you feel people are taking advantage of the fact that you’re inflexible then said combat athlete should address that.
It also depends largely on your personal “style”.
Shinya Aoki… extremely important.
Brock Lesnar… nottasomuch.
Another thing is that healthy joint mobility is important for injury prevention. You know all the stuff we see in Eric Cressey and Mike Robertson articles, “Magnificent Mobility” and the such… all of that holds true for combat athletes as well. So Flexibility/Mobility in that form is important for injury prevention.
Stretching muscle fascia can also improve hypertrophy potential and increase recovery. Improving muscle fascia period is important as we’ve seen the emphasis on myofascial release (Cressey again…smart dude) as of late. So stretching has that benefit.
Imo, you should dedicate a session to stretching a few times a week at least. 10-15min daily is a small price to pay to stay injury-free and try out some really freaky positions with your significant other. Plus you can pick up chicks in yoga.
There’s certain protocals towards stretching I’m sure you can find around the site or reccomended by people. Obviously like not before lifting or training anything strenuous- thats when you want to use dynamic warmups.
Also before I stretch I either like to get in a brisk warmup (burpees, squat jumps, pushups, and a little shadowboxing, etc) or just rub some liniment on so that my muscles are warm and i’m not stretching “cold”.
