Holy Shit! This absolutely destroys my thoughts of the carry-over of box to regular squat…he makes a ton of sense…Im also surprised wherein he states that he basically a proponent of divebombing the squat, this is very interesting and gives me a lot to consider, I appreciate this article James thanks a ton!

Hey Matty, the only two points to “worry” about in the article are 1. and 2.
In 1. he talks about ultra-wide squats to a box with a negative shin angle (something I can’t quite do BTW) not translating to a raw squat. The movement pattern isn’t the same as raw but it works the shit out of certain muscle groups that contribute to a raw squat. You can find vids of lifters in basically a sumo stance doing box squats; but you’re not doing that so don’t worry about it. Use the box for form and explosiveness from the bottom. My box squat and free squat foot placement is basically the same.
In 2. he talks about training quads. Westside is pretty light on direct quad training since most of the power is coming from glutes, hams and low back. But it’s easy to add in quad work on ME or DE days. I’m primarily doing front squats for this. And backward sled drags with a low body position hammer the quads. My quads are pretty fatigued the day after box squats so they get pretty good stimulation from that movement.
IMO, all systems work; 5/3/1, Juggernaut, Josh Strength, Westside, Sheiko etc. They are all more similar than they are different. Success is based more on commitment to the training approach than the system itself.
This concludes my preachy wall of text.

True Speak Git, thanks very much…and let me tell you I did DE upper and 155 is light weight, but really concentrating on explosion and form (not to mention the bands and 12 sets) and Im actually pretty sore…and x2 on the commitment to the system…I have committed myself to this (after a bit of flip flopping) and only my effort will determine its success.
NOTES: Felt great today the pin presses were great and really understand how they will translate for the regular bench, as well as the neutral grip db press. First week of Westside is over, and looking back Im happy I made this decision, as I go through the exercise I am kind of getting the purpose, and loving the movements. was alot of fun today…vid below of the 315x2, my flip died so I didnt get the 325x1.
I think that having a program that you enjoy and will stick to is the most important piece of all of this. Looking forward to watching how you progress.
Thanks James, x2 on “liking” what you do…of course I am not giving up my MP day, that will be my assistance day so to speak where I can do some lifts that the program does not call for then I will start week 2…

Its fine, hurt like hell for 2 days and I swear the third day it just dissapeared…Im not complaining
Glad to hear it.
The other training going well?
Have your buds gone over a game plan on how to choose your first lifts at the meet?
Not yet, I think about 3 weeks prior Ill decide, I am sure I will go for my first attempts at a weight wherein I could get three up, it seems like that is what most prescribe, which will help me with my jitters. I have googled “tips for your first meet” approximately 82 times over the past 2 weeks, as well read the APA rule book 36 times, Im becoming very anal about this!
