I’ve been reading through some old heavy metal columns and in one Ian King states that a Squat specialisation program alone can produce impressive hypertrophy gains…he even went as far as saying that you’d need to buy news clothes and scales!!
I wondered if anyone had an idea of the specific Squat routine Ian was refering to???

Sounds like it might be the “Limping” series. Do a search of “Limping Into October” It is a 12 week program. Hope this is what you were looking for.[/quote]
The rest of the series can be found by clicking on “Article Library” and then “Authors.” Click on Ian King, and you’ll see all of his articles on this site. Hope that helps!

Count me in, PtrDr. My goal is to concentrate on legs this summer. I was thinking about doing the Limping anyhow, but I’m for sure going to give it a go now.

What was the date of the Heavy Metal column?

The date was 25th Aug 2000. Here is the Q and A:
Best All Around Exercise
Q: I guess this is sort of a philosophical question rather than a practical one, but I was interested in your opinion. If you could only prescribe one exercise to improve overall athletic performance, what would it be? Would your answer be different if we were talking about pure size and not performance?
A: I’ve given this a lot of thought lately, one reason being I recently filled in a questionnaire for the magazine, Men’s Health, giving my opinion on a long list of exercises. (Only a few lines made it to print, oh well! It’s the August 2000 issue, page 57, if you’re interested.) I’d say with little hesitation the power clean is the ultimate exercise for sport. It provides strength and power (all in one) in the lower body, and strength in the upper back. It really is a complete movement if you only were able to do one lift, provided, of course, it’s executed in the appropriate way.
For size and performance, I’d probably go for the squat. I don’t need to tell you about the leg size you get, but for additional muscle mass in the lower and upper trunk, squatting is something that’s often overlooked. Put it this way, if you just wanted to increase total body weight (lean muscle mass), a priority squat program should have you looking for a new set of scales and a new wardrobe!
I was just interested by what he meant by ‘priority squat program’ - I am familiar with the limping series but thought from this Q&A IK might be referring to something different…
I was thinking about doing the whole 12 week limping program either mid July or Aug. Lot’s unilateral work and I’ve got a major leg imbalance that needs fixin’.
