I know this will sound crazy because many of you have already used these things, but I can not believe how much harder I work out with music blaring in my I-Pod.
That is all.

I hear ya! Throw on some In Flames or Silent Civilian and watch out.
I believe you. There are so many distractions in my gym, between the conversations and the music overhead and the TVs on the wall (yes, in the weight room!), that my iPod is a crucial tool for helping focus on the task at hand.
Really, I never use an Ipod while lifting, although I see many others listeining to their Ipods (and I can often hear their music). I understand how its good to avoid distractions and stuff, but wouldn’t the background music itself be a distraction towards having complete concentration while you’re lifting?

If you are the sort who can’t control himself singing along with a song you like, yes.
But part of the benefit is creating your own environment where the familiar tunes keep you in a certain mood/mode that helps resist being sidetracked from what you are doing by the sounds you CAN’T control.
Also, if you find certain music inspirational, or certain rhythms conducive to lifting, it’s great to have that with you, rather than hope something good comes up on the gym’s sound system.
I never remember actually hearing the music during my sets. I don’t tune it out on purpose, rather I just focus in on the lift itself.
My music does a nice job of keeping me (or getting me) amped for the next set.

I borrow my girlfriend’s Ipod when I want to do something crazy in the gym. There are only 1 or 2 songs on her Ipod that I actually like, so its a pain to use it during my whole workout and keep searching for 1-2 songs out of 200 or so. IMO, good music helps with lifting. Its just like a bunch of guys cheering you on during a lift.
If you can say I only use my ipod when I want to do something crazy, why haven’t you asked yourself why you don’t want to “do something crazy” every time you’re in the gym? Why not work as hard as you can?
I don’t do crazy things every time I go to the gym. I lift heavy and all, but I might try and put a certain amount of weight on the hack squat and keep going for 3-5 minutes, no matter what.
so what artists/songs do you listen to when lifting?
while running?
I need to get my Ipod fixed. . . My workouts have seriously been suffering because I’ve had to listen to Christmas music while working out for the past 2 weeks.
. . .
Yes, my gym sucks that bad. Worse yet, I have to blow out my eardrums every workout to shroud out their music when I do have my Ipod working.
I agree that listening to your own, load, music really improves workouts. I was really surprized when I used my I-pod for the firt time. The only problem is, where the hell am I supposed to keep that big bulky thing when I squat? I almost feel like I’m going to break it, or my body, because I’m consentrating on the thing in my pocket instead of the lift.

I use the iPod Agent 18 case. It is a heavy duty case that has a belt clip. I just attach the belt clip on the side of my hip for squats. The only thing is you cannot have a flimsy waistband.
I guess I’m different, I don’t have an Ipod, I go to the gym and exercise and go home, I just tune everyone out. I don’t have anything against anyone who has one, however, it’s just it’s not for me. Different strokes for different folks.
On a side note, at my old gym last year, a guy dropped a 70 pound dumbbell on his video Ipod and it smashed into about 20 pieces. I’ve never heard the F-Bomb so many times in a row from one person.
I love my iPod but not in the gym; i just can’t focus with earbuds in and music blasting directly into my ears. I need to hear myself breathe and it seems like direct, in-ear music is sensory overload. To each his own though! I’ve seen guys lift huge amounts of weight while listening to their iPod, so it can be done! haha
God yes. It helps so much - In Flames or Darkest Hour for me usually does the trick.
It’s less about actually having music and more about blaring out the stupid shit around you in the less-than-hardcore gyms most of us probably work out in. Sorry, but I just can’t go for max effort with Fallout Boy playing… I’d probably lift in total silence if I had the option, but isolating myself with music is the next best thing.
For those of you who haven’t tried it - I really suggest it. Get something angry and blasty to keep you on edge.
The music helps tremendously to keep me focused and on task. Also helps me train in a reasonable amount of time.
Ok with out sounding like a twat I have always said that there are better MP3 players than ipods. having said that I do own one of the first ipod nano’s I was pissed off because I had to get it fixed when I finally got it back I was happy until 2 days after they released the new ipod nano’s.
Comeone apple help me get my funk on.

Amen to this. It’s mostly just noise to drown out the other clowns around me. Like someone else said it’s about creating your own little environment or cocoon so you can focus more on what you’re doing.

Same here, I never remember hearing the music during the lift… I’m in my own little zone when I start the set.
