So how about it?
I do not lift with an iPod as i feel it diverts my attention away from lifting, i want my absolute best when i lift, but i wonder if i’m being entirely anal?
what do you guys think about blasting music while lifting?

I used to use an mp3 player when I lifted. Then I’d misplaced it so I had the joy of listening to the standard music piped through the speakers. Not too bad till they get to a commercial about the itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polkadot bikini… Over and over and over again. I wanted to stab myself in the ears the other day - I heard it 3 times in the 2 hrs I was at the gym. Anyway, no mp3 player right now even though I found it, and that’s actually ok. I don’t need to worry about wires getting hung up on me somewhere while I’m trying to dead or whatever and I doubt anyone wants to see me lip sync my music, or worse, accidentally bust out in song.
So long answer to a short question: no, no mp3 player.

You don’t listen to music when lifting? Why? Yes, you are being entirely anal because, if anything, music helps me not only keep momentum but enhances my mood. For many, lifting weights is near meditational anyway. Music helps put you in a zone assuming you aren’t listening to Mrs. Spears or the Backstreet Boys.
I listen to my ipod if I am training alone. I feel it helps me drown out the rest of the world and helps me focus my energy on whatever I’m doing.
The last thing I want to hear when I am training is the frat boy chatter, or the terrible music playing in the gym, or the members coming up to me asking for free help. My ipod protects me from all those evils.

I don’t use my iPod when I lift either. The musician in me has a “critical ear” that demands the music be the primary focus. Instead of concentrating on my lift, I’m thinking about the bassline and where my fingers should be or how I would change the timing etc. Way too distracting. But I crank the tunes when I run…or whenever I NEED the distraction.

I’m a musician too and I generally can’t go very long without listening to music. Perhaps I am more into “feeling” the music than worrying how they are playing an instrument. Music has emotion or a vibe to it. Unless I am working out around people that I know and who happen to be serious about training as well, I generally use it to tune everything else out.
Music is a must for me. I do like some ambient sound also so using headphones isnt perfect. But when I’m at the gym they usually have ultra crap playing and its impossible to lift to Cheryl Crow. Since I got the gym at home I just hook my iPod up to some speakers and I’m good to go!
I MUST wear my Ipod when I’m woking out. It definitly puts me in the zone.

I don’t think you’ll see much gain from lifting iPods…
Sorry, I had to. Not sure why.
I just bought my iPod not too long ago and I love it…so much better than strapping my portable CD player around my waist. I have a shuffle so the only thing is that it hangs around my neck, so for chest exercises, I have to make sure to move the iPod off to the side of my chest just to make sure I don’t crush the thing.
I couldn’t take it if I had to listen to the gym’s music when I lifted.
TJCooker you lift at Lifetime don’t you…
The music is pretty rough.

I could not have said it any better. So all I will say is “Ditto.”

bump* i could not lift if i had to listen to the bullshit music they play in the gym. how am i supposed to deadlift while listening to “listen to your heart” by whoever the fuck.
Gotta have my iPod, rock and roll music–a motivator-- to drown out the Brittney Spears music–a DEmotivator-- at the gym. At home, no prob, just blast the stereo while training.
When lifting weights, to be intense you need either:
A partner calling you a pussy and yelling at you to get thruogh the set.
or
An iPod screaming at you.
Thats just my .02 and way.

Of the fact that if you slip up 300+lbs will fall on you!

I am actually the opposite. I don’t get amped by someone yelling at me during a set. This is the reason I rarely ask for spots from people I don’t know. I don’t need some jackass screaming at me, “One more!”
I don’t mind a simple, but forceful “Come on” or “You got it,” but no screaming at me please.
Sorry, I’m done hijacking. And, yes I have an iPod Shuffle and love it for trips to the gym.
Gotta have my iPOD as my gym plays the queerest pop music. I have playlists speciifcally for lifting - lots of Maiden, Motorhead, AC/DC, etc. It is even more important when I do cardio - it helps me zone out on the track.
Many of the more “hard-core” lifters will shun the idea of using an iPod (or any other type of Walkman, etc) during workouts. Their rationale is a sound one: you shouldn’t be trying to distract yourself from the task at hand.
That said, if you use an iPod to inspire, instruct, or motivate yourself, it’s a different story. Like anything else, the iPod is a tool…useful in some contexts, not useful in others

I personally listen to my Ipod Nano when I lift, because it has become SO part of my routine. Its almost like I need to listen to it in order to have a good workout. As others have mentioned, it gets me “in the zone” But, that’s just me.
If you don’t like using it, don’t. You’re not being anal, man. Do what is best for you while lifting.
have a good one!
