Joe, re: the sumo, it’s a bit hard to tell but it looks like you don’t have your feet turned out much. This makes it hard to get the weight close to your center of gravity. Also, it looks like your legs are quite close together for sumo.

Might try a few tweaks and see what happens.

Jebus I forgot to turn my feet out!

I probably won’t go realy wide with stance but I might should have gone wider.
If you don’t go wide stance, you’re actually making the lift harder, because then your shoulders are pulling around an acute corner, your hips are too far from the bar and the range of motion is still long. I like toes just inside the plates, myself. I’d go wider if only I had a deadlift bar.
Hmm sounds like I might have to work my feet out.

Argy. I’ve been pulling narrow sumo. Now I find that I’m STILL all wrong. I guess I just don’t have the hip strength to break the weight off the floor with my feet that wide. Although I can go plate to plate.

I did notice that your toes look too straightforward, Joe.

Yeah the sun is quite motivating for me too.

Sumo is hard for everyone except giterdone. Most of us struggle too, just so you know you aren’t alone.

There is precedence for not having your feet that wide (though toes out seems universal):

Sure you start out low weight with sumo, but as you groove the motion, you get stronger quickly - plus it does good things for your squat. I’ve been able to get up to within 20 lbs of my best conventional pull with sumo and it’s easier on my back.

I’m just stubborn and keep pulling conventional.

Joe- I think some RDL work could help with some posture stuff-

dips and other work looking very solid

Sumo seems more form centric - I cant do it.
kills my hips

Modified sumo a la Coan is an option.

What physical factors (body structure, relative strength of hips / legs / back) determine the best sumo choice for competition are beyond my level.

But, if my goal was building overall muscle, and not necessarily pulling the biggest number, I would choose modified sumo. For me, it has a better balance of leg,hip and back involvement (largely determined by how much I hurt the next day and where) compared to conventional or full sumo.

I’m going sumo after the meet and I’m going to go low with my training max. say 275 or so and I’ll experiment with width etc and just see. part of my problem is I can’t decide if more muscle or pulling the biggest number is really my goal.

Hey Joe, I lift in the SPF, did the Arab meeting last year, but unfortunately can’t make this year. Where is AL are you? Currently I’m just NW of Montgomery.

I feel your pain on this one…bodybuilder? powerlifter? powerbuilder? bodylifter? um, probably not the last one

I work in Birmingham but I actually live further south in Helena. Its just a bit north of Clanton/Calera. So you’re around Prattville or further north?

The annoying part is that I KNOW I’m not going to get muscular but it still taunts me so.

Posting and watching the Coan video got me thinking. If I have a shitty squat relative to pull (275 vs. 405), I’m thinking the semi-sumo would be a better option for me, since it would seem to hit similar muscles (or at least more so than conventional pull) to the squat. Your thoughts, Git? Tia.

I actually switched to sumo for two reasons: to go easy on my lower back and help build my lower body. I do feel that sumo compliments my squat well. Basically, using squats and sumo I’m hitting legs twice a week (on everage). I just need to manage volume (go short and hard on each) so I don’t get too fatigued. I never schedule a de-load since I usually end up with an unplanned day off here and there. Both squats and deads are up about 50lbs in the last 4 months.
edit: I should add that while the numbers aren’t that impressive that shit was stalled for a long time. Any movement up is a win for me.

Prattville would be correct. Thought it would be a much better school system, but not really.
Hubby is in Air Force, thus it was a forced move.

Is he in the air wing or he is at the MEPS there?

I “thought” I was taping 250 as well but apparently I got my wires crossed and diddn’t hit the button. It came up nice and smooth. I have one more bench day before the meet and I’m considering giving 225, 240, 255 a shot with a lift off.

Nice! Lookin’ smooth.
