'I don't Care How Big You Are, I Train UFC!'

This is just a rant, so please don’t take it too seriously.

Since the rise of MMA, mainly promoted by the UFC, there seems to be this new trend. 50% of kids are now ‘‘MMA fighters’’. Fine, I can live with that (knowing most are full of shit).

Just so you know, I’m not a big guy according to T-Nations standards (6’0 195lbs), but to my friends I’m pretty big. Anyways, I’m a very quiet guy and I mind my own stuff, but in the past few months anytime I bring up my lifts / training with people I get a lot of ''Well this guy I know trains Muay Thai!

He’s kicked a guy’s ass that was 250lbs! Size really dosen’t mean anything!‘’ or ‘‘Well my friend got in 52 street fights, so no matter how big you are, he can kick your ass!’’.

I know I’ll get flamed for this, but I’ll try to explain it later on: The bigger guy wins 90% of the time, period. Why? Because he’s stronger, which is a huge factor. Now, I’m not a bully of any sort, I’ve only gotten in one fight in all my life, but this is just getting so annoying.

I don’t care if you’ve been training muay thai for 2 weeks, or have a punching at home or watch bruce lee movie, you will suddenly transform into Fedor and be able to beat down anyone no matter the size.

It’s almost an insecurity complex from smaller guys constantly trying to let you know ‘‘Hey, I train X martial art, no matter how big you get, I can always kick your ass.’’

The amount of people you know directly or indirectly that master a martial art to a point where they can litterally kick a guy twice their size ass is nearly non-existant, yet I hear it nearly everyday…

/rant

I may get flamed for this too, but there’s this one guy at my gym who is actually a legitimate fighter and he’s a really nice guy too.

Anyways, we talk because here and there we’ll help each other out on lifts and such. Anyways, we got into a convo about fighting one time and in regards to size and strength, he said that most smaller fighters will avoid fighting larger more muscled guys. Not always, but usually. He explained to me that they all know that if they make one wrong mistake and we connect on a hit, they’ll go down. Whether it’s his opinion or not, I don’t know. But I figure I’d share.

Most guys are just douchebags who watch MMA and think because they can wrestle their buddies in a living room that they’re fighters, fuck em all.

The people who are legitimately badasses don’t usually feel the need to go around bragging about it, because they’re secure individuals for the msot part.

Therefore, it’s usually safe to assume that shit-talkers are just bitchasses.

Very true.

As someone who’s actually trained in a few things, I think its funny when people go into this. But whatever. Smile and nod, like you’d do with a senile old person.

^^^Exactly. It gets them to stfu the fastest, and since I have nothing to prove to them, that’s the most sensible solution. Just like how everybody in the Marine Corps was somehow state champ at wrestling…

You’ll get flamed because you’re dead wrong.

Size has little to do with a fight- the factor that wins fights in the street (NOT in the ring) is the person who is willing go to immediately go to the highest levels of violence and use overwhelming force. This has nothing to do with size- it’s a matter of mindset and preparedeness coupled with basic skills training.

Look up a guy like Kelly Mccann or Marc Macyoung. Not huge guys, but ones who have seen the elephant. I wouldn’t want to fuck with’em.

And you’re talking about regular kids who are lying about training in MMA or boxing or whatever- but realize that if you’re actually fighting a practiced boxer, Mixed Martial Artist, whatever, you’re probably going to lose and lose quickly, even if you’re much larger.

And when you take into account weapons and numbers, as most fights or crimes do, you have an even bigger difference.

Exactly. Well said.

Well, a smaller guy is a GUN is obviously gonna win the ‘‘fight’’. Also, I never claimed that I’d kick a pro-boxer’s ass because I’m bigger just so were clear.

What I’m ranting about is kids who never lifted / practiced sports in their lifes, but ‘‘started training MMA’’ OR ‘‘have been in street fights’’ and suddenly take your size for granted and think they can pretty much walk through anyone bigger because of their ‘‘background’’.

There are obviously a LOT of factors involved in street fights, but my point is that on a ‘‘fair’’ ground (not drunk vs gun for example), the bigger guy will nearly almost come out on top.

Assumptions on either side are always something to stay away from…but I will say that it’s always funny when the type of guys you’re addressing seem to think that they are the only people that “train MMA,muay thai, etc.” Heaven forbid that there are “big” guys who actually train those things YET don’t go around bragging about it.

Size does matter in lots of instances…especially when the bigger, stronger guy is just as(or more) skilled as the smaller guy. Of course, that’s from more of an actual combat sports/competitive view. Streetfighting, etc IS a different story.

Well said. A real fighter doesn’t underestimate their opponent until they have seen firsthand how they handle themselves in a fight…but there do seem to be a TON of little guys who somehow think every big guy they see is some weak simpleton who can’t even throw a punch at all.

Size and strength are both great advantages…which means the idiots walking around ASSUMING guys with arms as big as their legs are so easily all taken down by 150lbs coatracks deserve to have their heads driven in. Likewise, you can tell a lot about someone just by how they stand in a confrontation. I personally wouldn’t simply assume that some guy way skinnier than me is unable to defend themselves.

I also very rarely see this from big guys. This ALWAYS seems to come from little guys with “small man syndrome”.

It’s all small man syndrome. I will also add that I wouldn’t put it past a smaller “skilled” guy to think twice about messing with a guy who has a serious “size” advantage…whether strong, skilled or not.

qft

small man syndrome should be renamed to bitchass syndrome

JZT, I agree 100%.

Actually, it’s not bad enough “to brag about some guy who can kick your ass” when these young MMA-fighters actually suck in the weightlifting room AND on the mat… So they get to say " I lift weights" in the MMA-training and “I train MMA” in the gym. So sad…

I just say I’m a bodybuilder and nod/smile. Same thing as in the gym when powerlifters say “but he’s not even that strong!”

Two completely different objectives, two completely different fields.

The one guy I know who is a legitimate “badass” tries his absolute hardest not to get into fights in the first place, because he has trained over the years to esculate the whole thing to an extremely violent level in the blink of an eye and people get horribly fucked up. Once it starts he has a “no stop till complete anihilation of the opponent” mentality and no retreat.(He has studied baguazhang and xing yi quan for the last 25yrs)
The one proper street fight I saw him in (actually a bar brawl) was quite sickening and freaked me out for a little while.

The thing is that no matter how big or small you are it’s hard to continue a fight with your eyes poked in or some of your extremeties bent back the wrong way and no matter how many squats you do you still have very vunerable parts on your body and that someone who knows how to exploit them and is lightning fast wtih power and is willing to take it all the way is going to severely fuck you over.

Plus even with untrained people there is the wildcard of taking on what you thought was an easy beat who turns out to be a complete pyscho.

I just nod and smile any time anyone talks about using mma in a street fight, anyway. Go ahead and try the ol’ ‘ground and pound’ while the other guy’s friend is kicking your face in. MMA is a retarded form of fighting anyway (flame away). It’s a SPORT for SHOW not a real martial art adapted for real-world hand-to-hand combat.

I really wish there was a dojo that teaches Krav Maga around where I live. THAT’S a real-world martial art.

I’m not particularly big, nor do I train MMA martial arts. I compensate by carrying a taser, taking aikido, and sparring at women’s self defense courses.

Oh noes, JP ^^ The “Style X vs. style Y” discussion on different martial arts forums is equivalent to the “size vs. strength” and “TBT vs. split” debates on here… Let’s not degrade the thread to that
But I agree with you - the problem is that a lot of those douchebags out there - and EVEN serious martial artists (doing traditional styles like Karate) - live in an illusion when it comes to street fighting.
When I trained Jiu-Jitsu we were told that size didn’t matter - the bigger the guy, the harder he’d fall. derp - you’re just not gonna be able to swing a 200+ guy around like a wet towel! Yelling “KI-AI” doesn’t allow you to defy gravity…

Krav Maga is much better suited for street assaults than MMA, but that doesn’t mean that any style wont do; knuckles on the nose still makes your eyes water wheter you call it’s a pronated punch, a jab, etc.

And size DOES matter, hence weightclasses in martial SPORTS. Another common flame war reason: you have to distinguish between martial ARTS, self defense and sport. People confuse these because of the overlap.

Spelling bee - it spells…
