Hungry's First Meet! Advice Please.

Here’s the deal; guy at my gym informed me of a meet happening in Charlotte NC next weekend, so I’m planning to compete in it. According to him the state record deadlift for the 198 weight class is 515, I’m weighing in at 203ish in the mornings, and hit a 635 DL about a week ago, so yeah.

I’m planning on cutting carbs and salt substantially this week to ease down to that weight, but just in case I need to drop a few lbs the day before (without anything crazy like breakoff cardio or sauna, etc), I would love a few tips/ideas from people like Hanley who are experienced in this sort of thing.

Responses/general advice/comments/jelquing are welcome and appreciated

Well, I’m not Hanley, but I’m pretty good at cutting weight and here’s the protocol I used when I had a Saturday meet. I had about 14 hours between weigh-ins and the start of the meet, with weigh-ins starting at 6:30 PM Friday and lifting at 9:00 AM Saturday.

Sunday:
2 gallons of water
Higher sodium
Normal food

Monday:
2 gallons of water
Higher sodium
Normal food

Tuesday:
2 gallons of water
Higher sodium
Normal food
Dandelion Root

Wednesday:
2 gallons of water
Higher sodium
Normal food
Dandelion Root

Thursday:
1 gallon of distilled water
No sodium
Decreased food (Zero carb by the end of the day)
Dandelion Root

Friday (Day of Weigh-ins):
No water
No food
No sodium
Spit in bottle and sweat if necessary

I was at 9 percent body fat by 7-site calipers. I went to sleep at 178 on Sunday night and by Wednesday night I was sleeping at 176. This was without decreasing food and with increased sodium. Thursday morning I woke up at 173.1. I went to sleep that night at 171.1 and woke up Friday morning at 169. I cut the final 4 lbs by spitting in a bottle. The scale I weighed on put me at 163 but I’m convinced it was light.

I put the weight back on by drinking a liter of Pedialyte and then eating two apples, a slice of pizza, 1.75 lbs of pasta and 25 breadsticks. After that, I drank a gallon of water and a half gallon of Pedialyte through out the night. Whenever I woke up to piss, I’d drink more and eat more breadsticks. When I reweighed the morning of the meet, I was 175. I injured my back during warmups, but I still wound up hitting PR’s on all lifts. My strength was definitely there.

You don’t have to listen to me though, as I’m not Hanley. =)

Can’t help you much with the weight loss but you can find the NC state records here http://www.carolinapowerlifting.com/nc_powerlifting_records.htm

See you there and good luck.

Thanks guys, very happy now that I’m seeing 198 lbs class squat is barely 500, and DL is 513. So hopefully I’ll have 2 state records by next weekend

tcsimon what weight class you in?

Hungry, I’ve dropped five or six lbs for a 2 hour weigh in using a virtually identical scheme to 165 state champ. While I don’t recommend cutting for a first meet, go for it if you are trying to get these records. Just make sure you open VERY light, know the rules (e.g., commands and equipment), and know how long your weigh-in period will be.

As for jelquing, as a female referee, I always prefer to judge males who deadlift shirtless.

Did you weigh yourself with or without all your clothes on? You may not need to cut any weight. Did you weight yourself on a full stomach?

4-5 lbs is nothing, weigh yourself in the morning without eating breakfast first if you havent already, then go by that weight.

I’ll be 242 bench only. Likely will be token lifts as I am still recovering from hip surgery but need to qualify for BP Nats this summer. My company will also be providing some sponsorship and prizes. I’ll be easy to find.

No words of advice just encouragement. I’ve seen your posts those records will belong to you. Keep us posted.

EDIT: I saw you post this in SOYG and almost choked. Good stuff
“Come on, you’re a smart dude, I think you can trust me that I know fuckin’ retards when i see them.”

BTW: Did you get the guys to DL spot from behind? You know for better lock-out (or whatever you told them)?

First off good luck OP with your first meet. I’ll be entering my first on April 10. I’m nowhere near strong enough to be breaking state records though!

165- thank you for laying this out for everyone, I’ve started cutting from 190 to 165 for my meet and have similar weigh in times. I was worried about cutting the last water weight as I’ve only done it a few times back in high school.

Hahaha thanks, and sadly I haven’t seen those douches again yet, BUT I’M WATCHING!!!

Bad news update though…it’s too late to get into this one, apparently I barely missed the deadline :frowning:

Good news update-there’s another meet, slightly closer, the weekend after, so I’m gonna try for that one instead, and have an extra week to prepare!

No problem, I’m happy to help. It’s what this site is for anyway =) I hope you’re cutting at least 5 lbs of fat though, because cutting anything over 15 lbs is going to require a lot of time in the sauna.

Did you talk to the meet director, Jon? I know it will be a huge meet, two platforms. They have accepted entries at the door in the past, the deadline may have been for mail-in entries.

He said they weren’t accepting walk-ins :frowning:
