Huge Hernia Between My L4 and L5

Just remember Viking, MRI isn’t a 100% gold standard, symptoms and severity do not always correlate to the picture.

I’m very glad to hear that you’re doing much better, you may want to consider some soft tissue work to unload the structures that will cause increased loading on the discs. I asked around and I couldn’t find anyone in the SD area who was highly recommended from a soft tissue/ART standpoint, but I’m sure there are some excellent providers out there, you just have to find them. But a dysfunctional psoas as well as posterior spinal elements (multifidi, interspinous lig, etc) are very frequently involved in increased disc loading. Good luck the rest of the way.

Just remember, much like someone who has a heart attack will always have a heart condition, you will always have a back condition, the important thing to do is to know how to manage it as much as you can on your own, and get the right treatment when you can’t, you can still function at a high level, you just may need some help to do it.

Does anyone here know more about what type of physical therapy Thiago Silva did to recover from his back herniation? I have the same problem and my trianing has been stopped because of it. It is interesting because of cases like Shane Carwin’s who decided to have surgery. Did Thiago undergo spinal decompression with his PT?

UFC 125: Silva kicks off '11 the right way - ESPN

The article states, “Ending his career actually became an option for a little bit,” said Silva’s manager, Eddie Miranda. "The only other options he had were to get surgery or try physical therapy and build up his strength from scratch, which is what he did. He literally had the strength of an old lady at the start of it.

“I think he’s had to learn to listen to his body and be smart through all of this. Before, he was one of the guys who would train nonstop for five hours a day. During the injury, he understood that he only had one shot to get his back strong and he had to change some things.”

The recovery was long but apparently very successful. Silva says his back feels stronger than ever now despite foregoing the surgery insisted upon by the first two doctors he met with."

Im just curious to see if the herniation recedes at all with the MRI after deecompression. For soft tissue work, I had a chiro before that offered ART, but he is gone now and I have a problem finidng a new one. At least one that doesnt try to rip me off with nutrition plans, and everything else they can charge me money for. I definately will have to change my goals to my injury, im just hoping to recover well enough that new goals are obtainable.

Thanks

Also Shane Carwin, who had herniations in his neck is back to training looking for a possible May fight date.

Will be curious to see how he does.

Yeah I agree it would be interesting to see, would be a good case study to point to the efficacy for decompression if it does recede. Yeah that’s a drag when docs try to push on the nutrition plans, most people have a crap diet for a foundation, so the supps are all too often not in the best interest of the patient, and more about the doc making more money. If you go on the ART website you can put in your address and look around, but I’m finding more and more that it’s hit and miss when it comes to ART providers, if I hear of anyone that comes highly recommended I’ll be sure to let you know.

Ok, yesterday I finished 20 sessions of spinal decompression. The weights ranged from 80lb pull in the beginning up to an 118lb pull for the last week. I originally negotiated 10 sessions and continued the process due to what I was feeling going on in my back. I will now conduct 2 months of therapy to strengthen my lower back and will continue to get alignment sessions at my original chiro. At the end of the next 2-3 months I willl get another MRI to see if all this really helped recede my 7mm Herniation. ALso just to add, I took a large dose of joint meds and drank a lot of water in an attempt to rehydrate my disc IF the decompression was allowing for that chance. I definitely feel A LOT better, and have a good outlook on the possibility that I will make a good recovery and wont need surgery. We will see. I will update down the road with another MRI.

Heres to never rounding my back again.
