HST

Has anyone tried or would they recommend using HST while on a T-Dawg like diet? If there is a response on a previous thread, let me know and I’ll chase it down. Just wondering if anyone wished to give their opinions on it? Thanks to all…

bump! anyone!?!

I’m currently using HST training while maintaining a cyclical ketogenic diet. I consume about 1800cals/dy, with less than 30g of carbohydrates. I eat a high carb meal on Sunday nights simply as reward for a good week. So it’s kind of a CKD with a very short and small carb-up. Personally HST is the program I like best with a keto type diet. I find the full body work outs help me deplete glycogen stores quickly on the monday. I have tried just about every training method in conjunction with keto dieting and HST is my favourite. The only modification I make is lowering the rep scheme a little. I do 2 weeks at 12reps, 2 at 8reps and 4 at 5reps with no negatives. The other program I like for keto dieting is Joel Marion’s 5x5 training. Like HST, I find this program helps me maintain muscle size and density while dieting. I have done many keto diets over the last 6-7years and the training program used made all the difference in the world for me. The original “bodyopus” training did little for me and I lost a fair amount of lbm. Some of the higher rep programs (Above 6reps) left me feeling week and caused me to sacrifice too much muscle. While the early part of HST is higher rep I find the lower volume keeps me from losing energy and the last four weeks of 5reps really helps me preserve strength and lbm. In general I would stick with a lower rep, low-moderate volume training protocol.

I tried HST with the T-Dawg diet. I consumed 70 carbs on workout days and 50 on non. I took in between 280 and 300 grams of protein daily, that combined with my fat intake would range in total calories between 2100 and 2400. After the second week of 10s I felt very weak. When I got to the 5s I couldn’t lift the same weight that I lifted for 5 reps prior to HST. I guess the results can vary from person to person, but after reading Joel Marion’s article on lifting while on a cutting phase specifically using the 5x5 method, I’m convinced that high rep programs won’t work for me while I’m on a cutting cycle. Things may work differently for you. Since I’ve been doing 5x5s while on T-Dawg I have gone from 17% body fat to 13.8% (calipers) and lost 6 lbs while regaining the strength that I lost prior to HST. I would try HST again, but while on a bulking phase. At least for the 15s and 10s.
