How's This Routine for Muscle?

Hey everyone. One of the main reasons I started working out was because my girlfriend of close to 3 years told me she liked muscles, expecially arms, chest, and abs. Well, all I want to do is please her so could yall help me create a “show” muscle building routine? Here is what I wanna try:

MONDAY
Incline bench presses
Dumbell flat bench pressing
pullovers

WEDNESDAY
Overhead press (alternate each rep in front of the neck, then behind the neck)
hammer curls
dips or overhead tricep extensions

FRIDAY
deadlifts
bent over rows
one armed dumbbell row

Every other day I do high rep squats, hopping squats, russian twists hanging off of a bench and decline sit ups with a twist.

Like I said, all I really want to build is the “show” muscles to look better. Thanks.

Um…Show muscles? Seriously dude, if you just try to build your chest, arms, and abs you’re going to look like a straight tool. How about building your whole body? I mean really, I’m trying not to be an asshole here…You’re on the right track with the compound movements though…

It isn’t enough to simply do squats for your lower body?

That is quite possibly the worst reason ever to start lifting. What happens when you break up? Most likely you quit lifting too. You need to find your own reason to lift so that you continue to do so even as the girlfriends come and go.

On another note - you should be focused on building all of your body, not just your beloved show muscles. 1)You are scrawny as is. 2) Show muscles will make you look like an ass, not that lifting only to please a skirt doesn’t do the same thing. 3) Lifting some muscle groups preferentially will create muscle imbalances which increase the probability of injury.

Well he has squats and deads in there alright, but they don’t seem to take any priority in his training. They seem to be an afterthought. I might be wrong, but that’s what it looks like to me. Some RDL’s and straight leg deads would be good. And you have no idea how annoying it is to hear about “show muscles”. All the dudes I see at my gym who do nothing but bench and curl (for the girls…) make the slowest progress and just take up space.

Seriously, at your stage in the game you need to read some Waterbury or Thibaudeau articles and make sure your routine is WELL BALLENCED.

Good luck.

Before all seasoned members blast me for my recommendations- remember this guy’s goals and realize that it is possible for someone to have different goals than you.

To the OP - Obviously you don’t care about total body training and just want to look good nekkid. That’s fine, at least your honest. In that case I seriously suggest sticking with isolated exercise, like most of the ones you have listed.

Deadlifts won’t help you much, Squats won’t help you much. Sure they build a solid foundation- but they won’t give you much in terms of “show muscles” so you will feel like you are wasting your time. Stick with bench, curls, dips, rows, and anything else you can do with DB’s. Add in some isolated leg exercies just to keep from looking like a lightbulb, like the leg sled and calf raises.

If there ever comes a day when you want to move past vanity as a reason to lift, there are lots of good plans on here for working out the right way. I also suggest you grow a pretty thick skin as there aren’t many people on here who share your same goals, if any at all, so you won’t get much assistance.
