When I was doing chin ups after heavy rows I noticed some pain in my elbow at the bottom portion of the rep.
No popping or cracking as far as I could tell, just pain near the end of the biceps. I can bend my arm fine and it only really hurts at the bottom portion of chin ups now.
I know a lot of people tear their biceps - how do you know if you’ve done this?

Even a partial tear was quite noticeable on myself when it happened a few years ago. I also heard a pop.

How did you recover and how long were you out for?

Did you need surgery?[/quote]
I partially tore it lifting a small concrete fountain. I heard a pop, looked down, and saw a gap between my forearm and bicep! Went to my chiropractor who said surgery wasn’t necessary… just care for it.
The recovery was LONG! It took a couple of years to regain full strength (as well as my confidence in it). It looks bad now and feels “odd” at times (like a numbness around the tear site).
Otherwise, I’m as strong as before, if not stronger.

Wow, I thought partial tears would not result in the bicep actually moving!
What, if any, upper body stuff did you do during these two years you were out?

I was amazed my arm could bend under its own power as well.
It’s funny how the body adapts.
I avoided anything that involved biceps. No chins, no pulldowns, no deadlifts, no curls of any kind. There was the initial healing time of several weeks, after which I added in VERY LIGHT dumbbell curls, per my doc’s request. I was cautious with every pulling motion for a long time after that.
From what I have seen and heard, if you had torn your bicep, you’d fucking know it. So as a rule of thumb, if you have to ask, it’s not torn lol.
When I was in college I trained with my dad and one of his buddies, and this guy tore his bicep bad enough to need surgery. Anyway, when it happened, there was a very audible POP, and he immediately passed the fuck out from pain. They thought he had a heart attack or something at first. Granted that was a bad tear. The bicep tendon snapped and his bicep basically just rolled up into his shoulder like when you let go of measuring tape. But still, even with just a partial tear, I think you’d know.
This is just a total guess, but it’s more likely just tendonitis in your elbow or something.
