Currently at 185lbs, 5'7" and 22% bodyfat. Using the 5/3/1 program and currently in the middle of my 2nd cycle. Current deadlift is 275, squat it 255, bench is 180 and my press is at 125. My goals are to have a 1,000 total (not including the press) and to be at 8% bodyfat (apparently the lowest bodyfat percentage before misery ensues. This year I will have access to all the food and gym that I could possibly need.
I want to know if at my level of development I should overeat to reach my goals or if eating maintenance will let me reach the 1,000 total. Inversely, I was wondering if I could actually undereat (to lose weight) and still reach the 1,000 total. I know it’s not always practical to serve two masters so that’s why I’m asking you, T-Nation.
Getting to 1,000 and then cutting is also an option.
I know the 5/3/1 book sort of went over this, but I feel that Jim Wendler’s drills are more of a conditioning thing than a weight-loss regiment. I don’t mind doing both if it doesn’t slow progress horrifically.
5/3/1 with the BBB template with the current calories you have.
Dont mess around with too much at the moment, wait a couple cycles till you start to modify your diet
If you don’t have a few competitions under your belt, weight loss or gain shouldnt be too important. Eat enough to not feel like shit between workouts and get stronger. I don’t know what kind of conditioning you are doing, but if it is exactly what it says in 5/3/1, then you will lose weight.

Given your current strength and bodyfat levels, you need to do 3 things to make progress:
lift weights
don’t eat like shit
condition
22% bodyfat at 180 lbs means you are carrying 140 lbs of lbm. The last thing you need right now is to overeat.
