How Much Weight Off Season/In Season?

Hey…

I’m just curious, how much weight (generally) do most IFBB pros cut when in season?

How much weight (again generally) do natural guys cut down to?

*I know the answer varies depending on the bb’er (Priest for example) and size but I’m just curious to see on average how much do they cut?

20-60lbs or more…and that is for ANYONE.

There are only two bodybuilders I have ever heard of who “dieted up” to contest weight. Most people at the NPC level and above drop in excess of 40-60lbs for a contest. Someone competing at 240lbs is likely near or over 300lbs in the off season.

Kevin English who competes in the 202lbs weight class is 270lbs in the off season…and still lean enough to see abs.

Is one of them Levrone?

EDIT

Also, Toney Freeman seems to stay in almost contest ready condition all year round.

Also don’t forget that it’s much easier to cut large amounts of weight without losing as much muscle mass while juicing. Still, I’d say 20-30lbs easy. Say you’re a natural and your weight at 5% is 190, you’d be 13% at 220, 17% at 230. You’re also not going to find many naturals who remain contest shape year round, unless they don’t want to put on any more muscle.

Kevin boggles my mind because in my opinion he can compete with the bigger guys. But I did hear talk of him moving up.

That dude is 20lbs heavier by the weekend after the Olympia. He is fucking HUGE in the off season but he thinks, because of his height, he will get overlooked no matter how jacked he is if he competes with the bigger guys.

He has a point. That is why Lee Priest is shooting for the 202 class as well.

English can either DOMINATE a small pond, or just be another “also ran” with the big guys.

Yes, Levrone did this and Kiyoshi from this site claims to do the same.

The ‘Rule Of Thumb’ I was given is 10-20% (under 250) 20-30% (over 250) over contest weight. I think that is pretty accurate.
300 offseason / 240 at contest / 60lbs is 25%
240 offseason / 200 at contest / 40lbs is 20%

I think Kiyoshi said he only did it for his first year, and all the other times he’s actually dieted down.

Also I think Dex stays pretty lean all year round. In one of his videos he said that he aims to add a few “quality pounds” each year. Not sure how up to date his site is because it says he only drops 12lbs (245 → 233) to get into contest shape, which if at all true, he must be insanely lean all year.

Bill Pearl dieted up in the later part of his career. Mr. Americas Don Howorth and Bob Gajda also did. But this was in the '60s/early-'70s and they ended up competing in the 200-230 range, still much smoother than today’s pros.

Dieting up really seems to be something that only the truly-genetically gifted can do successfully.

I’ve seen some competitors stay withint 20-30 lbs, and then you’ve got the guys who go so far above their competition weight, that everyone starts betting that they’ll never make their conditioning (remember Kai last year?!)
