How Much Running Is Too Much?

The funny thing is, people who ask about doing a combination of drinking alcohol and lifting seem to get more positive feedback than those asking about running and lifting.

I say do it.

My main fitness goal for this year is to replace about 8-10 pounds of fat with muscle. But if that isn’t realistic, I at least want to lose the 8-10 pounds of fat without losing any muscle in the process. I’m currently 150 pounds, around 12% body fat.

Several of you have mentioned that I need to eat more if I decide to train for the marathon relay. If I eat more, will I still lean out or will I just put on muscle and fat? I’ve been eating around 1800 calories/day while working out 5x/week.

Only 1800 calories? That’s not very much… not if you’re training 5 times a week and want to gain muscle.

If you eat cleanly (granted it’s much easier said than done), you won’t put-on much (any?) more fat.

Now I really think you need to run, I suspect you have attempted to try eating above maintance calories, but stopped after you saw too much fat gain with little muscle gain.

Now, with the running, if you eat above maintance, starting at about 200 cals with the running your body might tend to use the extra calories to build muscle instead of gain fat.

Don’t increase the calories in one day either, do it over time being mindful of your bodyfat, and have one day out of every four where you consume at least 225 grams of carbs starting now. The other days should be below bodyweight (100 for two days), and one at bodyweight, 150grams.

These are not hard a fast rules, play with it over time to see what you like.

5 miles is easy. I’m forced to run it every Friday as part of my unit’s PT program. Not exactly glamorizing, i just eat extra that day to compensate.

Again, 5 miles is easy, even for a 200+ guy with a gut like me.
