How Much Protein Do You Really Need?

One big meal a day is great, ask any sumo wrestler.[/quote]

Did I say that? Or did I just provide an explanation to how the human body can use more than 42 grams of protein at once? You say you study physiology, you should know that.

After a meal, food can remain in the stomach for hours. Does this mean that we can eat 126 grams at once since we only use 42 grams per hour? Or does it mean that you just don’t know shit about the physiology of a man who can curl you?

Alright guys, since you all are sure that i’m talking out of my ass, how much protein are all of you consuming in one sitting? Is anyone consuming 70-80-90 or even over 100 grams of protein in one sitting? Anybody?

I already said I have no problem with being wrong or accepting that maybe I have been misinformed on a topic, i’m always about furthering my education on any topic.

If you all are correct, how come nobody is out there advertising to the world that consuming 70 80 90 100 or even more than 100 grams of protein in one sitting is beneficial to your diet and muscle building? Even a “high protein diet” is described as 1-1.5grams of protein per lb of bodyweight. So tell me, who out there is consuming 500+ grams of protein in an entire day? Anybody? if you are 225 and consuming 2 grams of protein/lb a day you’re barely hitting the mark!

Why is it so absurd to you all that your body can only process X grams of anything at one time! you think your body can just continually absorb anything you put into it without it having a peak? I said 42 grams on average, at a time, do the math with your “grams of protein perday” on a regular meal plan and it makes perfect sense. I haven’t seen one other reasonable explanation besides prof. x and even he hasn’t established any real numbers.

As i already said, do what’s best for you, but cmon now, who is really eating that many grams of protein in an entire day let alone one sitting.

That would be me again…you know, that guy with the Biology degree.

Yup, around workouts or when I’m too lazy to eat more meals so I condense two into one larger one.

LOL. You are nowhere near as hard on people as you normally are. What’s wrong?

200 grams of meat is about 40 grams, right?
1 litre of milk is 35 grams.
7 eggs is 42 grams.
Then, yeah, quite a bit above a hundred sometimes and I go over 42 at least once a day.

Professor X, you’re telling me that your body is able to absorb that many grams of protein at one time? Consuming that is one thing, your body absorbing it all is another, i’d be interested in what your colleagues would have to say about this matter.

I said ABOUT 42grams, DEPENDING on the individual. Still have yet to see anyone with quality information post a damn thing that contributes in a positive manner to this discussion.

LOL!! One of my colleagues eats more meat than I do all day long and has been an avid weight lifter and bodybuilder for as long as I’ve known him. Why would I care what people have to say when they are NOT gaining muscle and have no experience there?

A usual meal for me is a pound of steak, two scoops of MAG-10 and some rice WITH FUCKING VEGETABLES (for those who have a fit any time I don’t write that).

I’m a big boy. I am thinking I am doing quite well on the absorption issue.

Are you really going to continue this? I see much fail in your future.

You’ve had people post their personal experience, it’s not like we all have studies lying around to refute people who don’t believe us.

So please, enlighten me, as i’ve asked all along. With a bio degree, you must have a great understanding of the physiological properties of the human body. Do tell, how many grams of protein can one reasonably expect to absorb at one time. Yes, variances from someone who is 200lbs to someone who is 300lbs which is obviously understandable, but what can one expect?

Actually, what quality information have you posted? Other than “the book told me so”.

Still, dude, where the fuck did you come up with that number? Hell, cite a quaternary source if you want, I just want to see anyone who doesn’t think that number is fucked up.

I explained the relevant regulatory mechanisms of digestion for you and reminded you of the fact that digestion, if needed, takes so much time that the significance of your number fades. What more qualitative contribution do you need? Someone who agrees with you?

The fact that your body normally doesn’t need to absorb more than 42 at a time does not mean that a body can’t.

There is no specific number, jackass. Science does NOT have everything about the human body figured out yet. Maybe in a couple hundred more years, MAYBE, but anyone walking around thinking studies have proven EVERYTHING today only show how naive and undereducated they are.

The more you learn, the more you realize we still haven’t figured out.

No need to get all personal, professor. As you are one of the most respected entities on this site as far as advice goes, I guess was expecting more of an explanation, especially given your biology background. I haven’t disrespected anyone at all, just defending what “I” believe is good science. I never said 42 grams is the exact specific number for anyone and everyone, review my posts. I suggested to the guy who asked, that 40-50 grams would be a good target to shoot for. Even you, professor, along with everyone else, has not been able to discredit my claim at all, and that’s fine. You may be right, and I do respect and appreciate the knowledge you bring to this site. As I said along, do what’s best for you, anyone thinking that you can’t have TOO much protein is just wrong, and are most likely committing overkill on their kidneys and liver, and wallet.

I retire.

Last I checked, most of the grad level phys courses and their textbooks revolve a lot of what they say around studies based on the GENERAL population. Now, I’m going to go out on a limb here, but according to what I see walking around in society day to day, most of the GENERAL population probably wouldn’t absorb jack shit, because they aren’t training worth a damn.

Now, I have yet to see any studies, randomized, controlled, and everything else, that involve a BODYBUILDING population. One who actually trains with intensity, eats caloric excess accordingly, and makes strength and weight gains with regularity. Now your “42 grams” may be fine for Average Joe, but I’d be incredibly impressed if Jacked Joe could make any gains off a simple number.

And, for good measure, I’ve regularly consumed over 100g protein postworkout in my quest for mass. 50+ lbs in a year isn’t bad, so I guess your numbers don’t apply to EVERYONE.

Discredit your claims? Wouldn’t that require several studies done on BODYBUILDERS who are TRYING TO GAIN AS MUCH MUSCLE AS POSSIBLE IN A GIVEN TIME PERIOD under very controlled conditions and then subjected to peer review?

Hey guys, “I read cats can fly if you toss them in the air after jacking them off while wearing a wetsuit!!..DISCREDIT ME!!!”

I thought cats could fly if I toss them in the air after jacking them off while wearing a wetsuit…

For someone with a bio degree and all that time you must have spent in the lab over the course of your college career, i’m impressed with your responses.

And yes 42grams, ON AVERAGE, like i stated, the gentleman who asked this question originally did not state any of his stats.

Dude, they do, because I said so, discredit me!!!

Whenever I get into a verbal fight, I’m gonna put on a lab coat so I can’t be wrong.
