How Much/Often Do You Sleep?

Up until now,I took sleep for granted. Sure,I wake up,eat,Work out,Nap,and go to either School or Work and then I go to sleep and during the weekend I abuse my sleep cycle by staying up going to clubs or having long, stupid awesome sex until the following morning where I usually go to work at 11 in the morning. Pretty typical routine for most of us.

However, now that my schedule my possibly change back to my old graveyard shift ( possible work from 2 o’clock in the effin morning!) and the fact that my house is being remodel right now (I come home from work at 10 and fall asleep at around 3 and my brother and dad wakes up around 6 and mom starts working on the flooring),I haven’t had sleep in the last week. Sure I had naps but long, full hours of rest have been absent.

This is really bothering me because im losing concentration towards my online math hwk (I been staring at the same problem for over an hour) and I STILL haven’t gone to gym. Im getting to point where im asking people on my facebook if I can sleep at their house. Anyway,so the thread question…How much/often do you sleep? Does rest affect your workout regiment?

Your body repairs the damage you do during working out while you sleep … the less sleep you get the smaller the chance your body has to recover

Seems that your body is telling you it needs rest … hence your lack of concentration/motivation

It’s a pretty simplified version, I’m sure someone will explain it in more detail

But, to answer your other question, I get between 7 to 8 hrs of sleep every night … I never sleep shorter/longer than that unless it is absolutely necessary and it’s always shorter (work or school may keep me up) … I never sleep longer than 8 hrs

I used to work 11-7 in the morning when I was in the Air Force and I set it up for me to go to sleep around 8 or 9 depending on when I ate breakfast … I’d wake up and go to the gym then go to school then go to work at 11 again … why don’t you go to sleep when you get home? Seems like you’d have ample time to sleep that way

Walls are paper thin,I cant sleep because EVERYBODY snores and when I try to sleep early,my body wont calm down. Im a very light sleeper and im thinking about sleeping in my car until my house is done. Apparently nobody wants me to sleep at their house.

Ear plugs. [/quote]

is one solution

here’s another … is there anywhere in your house where it’s quiet while everyone else is sleeping … i.e. is there anywhere out of ear shot that’s quiet where you could set up a make shift bedroom? Anywhere you could set up a sleeping bag or air mattres?

It’s always the ones with scratched out faces … are you going to make him squeel like a pig too?

I have a lot of trouble sleeping, i’ve gone for days in the past where i’ve tossed and turned the whole night with almost no sleep. Right now I’m doing better, i usually get around 7 or 8.

You should get your hands on an eye pillow, melatonin, valerian root, and Benadryll (use moderately). Melatonin is a really big help if your having trouble sleeping and can pack a powerful combo with valerian root. Ear plugs seem smart, they’ve worked for me in the past. Honestly though, the biggest thing that helps me fall asleep is to do 15-20 minutes of relaxation exercises and meditation before bed. You said you’re often too excited too sleep, so my guess is meditation is probably the answer for you as well.

When i have to get up in the am, i typically get around 4-5 hours of sleep, if i don’t have a set time i need to get up, i get around 10-11. On the days i need to get up early i do take a nap or just take it easy for 30 minutes or so. I am one of those people that takes along time to wake up as well, so yes concentration does suffer if i need to wake up early.

MM hold the F

I get 8 or 9 hours if I can help it. In my 20’s I got 4 or 5 - can’t do that shit no mo’!

good luck - I hope you find a solution. Just to annoy you, I thought I’d mention that I can sleep through just about anything (I think I slept through sex once or twice).

j/k

Sleep is crucial because your body’s rate of cellular turnover (repairing tissue, kind of important after lifting heavy ass weights) is eight times higher in your sleep. Sleep is the ultimate recovery!

I need about 9 hours a night, and I absolutely hate short-changing myself. It pretty profoundly affects me the next day.

I usually get between 7-8 hours a night. I have a hard time getting more than that, unless I am able to sleep in as late as I want, which is almost never.

As far as the noise goes, try buying a small fan. I had the same problem until I got one of those. The constant low level of noise really cut down on the amount I would be woken/kept up by others.

Maybe people saw your avatar pic lol

I’ve been sleeping with ear plugs for about 6 months or so. It’s a huge difference; unbelievable. I live in the city and once 7am hits…every goddamn truck in the city is backing up outside my window and unloading jackhammers and CAT bulldozers to do construction across the street or right beneath me. My sleep has improved drastically.

I’ve even been thinking of getting one of those eye masks to kill the light as well. I’ve heard equally good things about these.

In answer to your question, rest affects me in every way. I get about 8 hours minimum and usually supplement with an hour or shorter nap somewhere in the day, particularly when i have to wake up before getting 8 hours (but the total is almost always at or above 8). I just find I need a lot of sleep. I almost always try to feel well-rested before training because when my body is prepared for sleep and yawning at the gym, I know I’m not as productive as I could be. Those days I take naps before training. If I don’t get enough sleep, I just know…there’s a feeling in my eyes, in my mind, all over. It’s like feeling ‘unprepared’ in a sense.

Ear Plugs + Sleep Mask + Melatonin + Teddy Bear

maybe scratch the last one…

Thanks everybody,I already bought ear plugs and I think they’re going to work great tonight. I might get a small fan as someone suggested earlier. That seems like a good idea. My performance at the gym was very subpar today. I didnt even really want to finish my shoulders. Lets hope I rest up so I can do some squats. (I think of all the workouts,Squats are the ones that seem the most dangerous to do when your not very motivated or not very focus) I think my efficiency at Costco is suffering but its impossible to get fired from there so meh.

I work night shift and have two kids at home. Wife works day-shift. It’s awesome because we don’t have any childcare expenses. But the downside is reduced sleep for me. I get home at 3:30 in the morning and then up at 7:30 to get one of the kids to school. The other kids is only 1 year old. I take a nap in the morning for about an hour when he takes his. This is only 4 days a week, then I get normal sleep on the weekends.

I stay sore longer after a workout but I still make gains. Probably not as fast as I could though with more regular sleep.

I’ve slept 3-4 hours a night since about 1992. For what it’s worth, I’ve also done overnights since about 1994.

Doesn’t seem to affect my performance much, but I’ve been functioning on that level of sleep since before I had any interest in my fitness, so I may not be able to tell.

Blacked out windows, earplugs and especially GABA seem to help me. But I rarely use the the last two as I’d usually prefer to be awake.

sound machine!! started out with the kids one to drown out noise while they took naps… now im hooked with the sounds coming through the monitor… we travel a lot with ball and take one with us!! makes a huge difference in the quality of sleep!!

i also have to have a fan going
