How Much Do You Chin?

105 x 9 reps last week weighing about 210 and in another session 125 x 5 reps after completing 5 sets of 3 with 125. Chinning/pullups are my strongest lift. I’m trying to get me bench to come close to that strength.

Nice lifts. Where do you work out in Seattle? I lift at University of Washington IMA, but its my last year as a student.

Thanks. I train at a small personal training studio that my wife and I own. I trained many moons ago at the IMA. I haven’t been in since the big remodel but it looks like they have done a lot of work.

115 pounds for 1 rep at 180 pounds of body weight… my one rep chin… and one rep dip of 135 pounds… are about my only semi-respectable lifts… i can chin about 50 more pounds then i bench… is that bad??

Wow, awesome. I’m going to have to start adding more reps to my routine. I can come close to your low-rep numbers, but I think there’s no way I could hit 9 reps with 105.

BW+135x3 at 190 pounds.

I just purchased a nice station for the home gym for around $100 on sale, called the StrengthTrainer PowerTower, made by Keys. It’s a really sturdy rig, and I went out and looked at a slew of 'em for comparison. It’s a combo station with a captain’s chair, pull/chin bar, and a dip station. It even has some handles on the base for push-ups. I recommend it, as it’s built solid and rated heavy.

On topic; I weighed 175 after my last mini-cut and I incorporate both chins, pulls, and dips into my upper body workouts. Chins, by definition, are done with a pronated grip, and are so called for the fact that you are trying to clear the bar with your chin. Pulls, by definition, are done with a supinated grip and you should by touching the bar with the upper part of your CHEST at the top of the movement. Using an Ironman belt with 45 lbs. chained to it, I do 3 sets of 11/10/9 reps for pulls, and with 40 lbs., 10/9/8 reps for wide-grip chins. Angled chest-focused dips, I bust out 10/10/9 with 45 lbs.

With no weight attached I can do crazy numbers, but the fitness tests I periodically do for work don’t count anything above 30 reps.

I’m at 182 weight-wise currently and shooting for 195 and then a cut back down to 185 and that is my ultimate goal weight.

I wouldnt say “by definition”. Ive always termed everything in the from of a chin up. Either a supinated grip chin, pronate grip or neutral. Ive never heard them listed the way you described but i tend to follow poliquins definitions.

Last cycle i did a chin with i did 10x2-3 with a 35 and 5 around the waste, then did 3 sets of 3-5 with a 25. Really liked this set up

Finally, a thread about my one decent lift: BW (190) + 100 lbs for 2 reps, full stretch, supinated. That was last friday.
The hardest part is getting the belt in place with those plates attached!

Some pretty scary numbers you guys are posting!

188lbs bodyweight + 65lb for 5 reps.

Absolutely beastly!!!

I can do three 1 hand BW pull ups and do 26 regular chins

I wish I could do one. I try but I just hang there. I pull and curse and get red faced, but nope. I don’t get half-way up and stall either; I just don’t move period.

BW(167)+70 for 2 reps. Trying for more tomorrow.

Why get a belt? I use a rope. Used to use a chain.

My best right now is 122.5 lbs @ a bodyweight of 205. Funny thing is that I would struggle to hit 15 unweighted reps.

I am like that. I can keep adding weight for a few reps, but my endurance is limited to like 14 reps with BW.

just thought id chime in and say i also am like this…as some of my friends i train with…

assuming this means the the vertical pulling muscles are primarily type II fibers?

I’d tend to think that has something to do with grip. Now I’m seriously considering trying out a pair of straps. At the very least it should be able to let my lats do more of the work.

At 220 I can do 12 chins or so, and I can hit a single with 55 lbs. I’ll see how taking forearms out of the equation affects those figures.

6 x 6
45lbs plate + 160lbs bw

195lbs total :\

lookin to achieve one arm pull up!!!

No belt. Just a 20lb DB for 4 reps.

Good start keep going!![/quote]

Now, after just over a month, the heaviest I did was a 25lb DB for 8 reps.
