How Many Pull Ups is Average?

How many Pull Ups can a average 15/16 yr old boy do?

I can do 20, is that good or bad?

20 pullups would definitely be more than average. Especially if they are full range pullups with a pause at the bottom. And extra-especially if they are done with a wide grip.

20 chinups (with your palms facing you) is quite a bit easier than 20 pullups (with your palms facing away from you), but would still be better than average.

David Gentle, a famed british strength historian and writer, says that 12 chinups is fair, 20 is good, 30 is strong, and 60 is “super strong”.

average, I would guess, is between 5-9. 20 is good for any age.

20 is exceptional for anyone of any age. The most dead hang Pull-ups (clean) that I have ever seen, in a row, is 50.

I need some help, they are proper pull ups. But i dunno where to go next, i havnt actually seen much about building muscle and that because it is quite confusing. I am 15 i play footy maybe once a week, but thats all i do. I have a 6 pac which i want to get defined can you guys give me any tips?. Im guessing my diet is good because i dont work out yet have i have a 6 pac. Im about 5"7 :D, and is 12" arms good for a sumone my age?

One question: do you have a 6 pac?

Yes, but i want it more defined

Guy - he was commenting on your stating twice that you have a 6 pac - we heard the first time

I wouldn’t worry too much about getting “more defined” at 15 years old. Just lift and eat a lot, this is a great time to put on a lot of muscle.

You aren’t going to get too many good answers here because it is obvious you haven’t done any reading, I good place to start would be in the FAQ section.

If having a “defined six pack” is your only goal, you are at the wrong site.

To answer your question, 20 pull ups is a good number, I was around the same spot at your age. I haven’t been able to get too far past that number since I put on about 30 lbs. over the next couple of years.

It depends on your weight. When I was a kid, I weighed more than some guys on this forum do now. I was stronger than most kids, but I definately couldn’t do 20 pull ups.

But what do you want to hear? “Dude, you are HUGE for a 15 year old, 12” guns are awesome, and 20 pull ups is heculean!"

Does it matter if it is good? All that matters is that you can do better. So stop impressing us with yout “6 pac” and go eat.

So what foods do you suggest?

Like should i Drink alot of milk for calcium.

Have lots of food that contain protein?

The above posts are to see where i stand.

Most of the kids I teach and coach your age can do about 5 on average. Some can’t do even one. Very few (10%?) can do ten. I have only seen a couple who can do 20.

at least im above average:D,

What would Excersises would you suggest i start doing?

Is that 2pac’s bigger, more gangsta cousin?

That’s why your # of pull-ups doesn’t matter. When I was 7 I weighed more than you do now.

I don’t say this to bash you, but the sooner you stop worrying about where everybody else is, and start focusing on improving yourself, the better off you’ll be.

What foods should you eat? everything. Stay away from processed, pre-packaged food, and eat lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains and meats. Don’t say you can only eat what’s in your house, that’s BS. There is no reason you can’t get a job and buy your own groceries, and cook your own meals if that’s what you have to do. It’s what I did when I was 15, after all.

I think the bigger question is, why would you care what the average pull-up count for a boy your age is? Why not ask what the most anyone has seen for someone your age and instead compare yourself against that. Give yourself something to improve on, not pat yourself on the back for.

When I was in the military and they did test for new guys, I saw very few guys do more then 3. 12 was awesome. 20 would win everything. I was shocked by seeing how many could not even do 1 (probobly 20% or so). These guys are usually 18-23 years old. And the tests are done with pronated normal grip (I always forget what is a chin up or pull-up)

For pulls and chins, start adding weight to yourself. And read every article on T-Nation.

Use the search function and look up foods that help you look good nekkid - those are the types of foods you’ll want to eat. Also look for Dr. Berardi’s Massive Eating articles, they’ll tell you how to put them together.

As far as exercises - compound (that means more than one joint is moving) movements that you hear about people using big weights on are a good start. Squat, deadlift, bench, overhead press, bent over rows, weighted chins, cleans, etc. Make sure you use perfect form on every rep - you’ll make gains in strength and size faster and more safely this way than if you throw away all abandon and just pile on the weight before you’re ready.

Good luck, feel free to post for clarification on the above articles.
