How Many Have Bigorexia?

this clip sort of suprised me, at one point it seems that they come across as bodybuilding being unhealthy, maybe I was just taking it in the wrong way.

Have a look & see what you make of it:

Man, I wish!

Then maybe I’d be big but not realize I was big and keep working to get bigger.

Oh yeah, that guy is big…but he really needs to shave his back and shoulders.

He just strikes me as a guy who is really into bodybuilding.

Tell you the truth, he seems like just about every serious guy at my gym, and I doubt they are all bigorexics…

Edited to say: “gym” not “guy”

That’s what we all do.

Minus the steroid abuse, I really don’t think he’s got a problem. It’s kind of sad really that people have convinced him that it’s unhealthy because he wants to win a major title and continue to improve his body. To me that’s not a disease, it’s his dream and no one should be making him feel guilty of mentally ill for having it.

I dont get it, is he mad that he has this or does he see it as a blessing?

There’s no problem at all. He wants to win a pro BB competition. Just seems like a regular dedicated guy.

Here’s the thread where this documentary was discussed some 7 months ago:

I think they picked a guy who speaks and acts like a victim. There isn’t much actual difference in what drives him than what drives most people in the gym who actually look like bodybuilders. I think they falsely pushed the angle that everyone like that actually thinks they are extremely skinny. I doubt there are very many people like that, including that guy.

The problem isn’t that he lifts, the problem is that he doesn’t feel good about himself. Having his disorder would be hellish and I certainly wouldn’t want it. Even if it came with the 19 inch arms.

What the video refuses to point out, is that it has nothing to do with the lifting.

That segment is garbage.

The first thing he thinks about in the morning is having a proper breakfast…HOLY SHIT!!! OH NOOO!

I think the key difference here between what may or may not be a condition is that he never actually indicated that he is still skinny. I am not incredibly familiar with this “disorder” but I feel like someone who had it would admit to feeling “skinny” or looking like they barely worked out. I’m pretty sure that this guy knows what he looks like, even if he’s not satisfied.

And they still never discussed whether he was depressed or not as a result of his percieved lack of size.

How the fuck does anyone get to be an elite athlete if they are satisfied with being less than the best?

Ridiculous.

I read a book about body dismorphia or “bigorexia” and in most cases the people affected by it are very ashamed of their bodies and are known for covering up- even in hot weather. I don’t think this guy would be onstage in posing trunks if he had a serious case of this.

Yeah, I’m going to have to agree with this.

And yeah… “The first thing I thought when I woke up was 'I need a proper breakfast.” Holy Mother of God alert the media, this guy’s being unhealthy.

…what the hell is wrong with people?

At first I agreed, but…

supermodels, man.

I think this guy might have a slight problem. I’m being serious. This isn’t a lead off to sarcasm. I think he has some issues with self respect. I know me and everyone else sees parallels with this guy’s life and our own: the double glass protein shake, spacing out on if you’re gonna do heavy bench first or incline dumbell bench first, having goals. All that’s healthy.

What’s not mentally healthy is when this guy takes a step back from lifting and doesn’t say “I’m pretty damn huge and I’ve proven to myself I can transform my body” but thinks “Ah shit I haven’t made enough progress to be proud of and now I find out I have a mental disorder.”

It would be absolute madness to try and stop that guy from bodybuilding. He’s not insane. He doesn’t need to be weened off weights. He needs to be proud of what he’s been doing and acknowledge that the work he’s put into himself has proven value.

I wonder if his was verbally abused as a child. I mean, I got my ass kicked up and down the halls in high school and I’m not half as screwed up as this guy is.

Yea, really…givin SMCBA a bad name with your small size.

Just kidding, Nate. :stuck_out_tongue: Apparently I should have bigorexia, because I tell all those who say I’m getting bigger delusional. Well, according to this shit anyway.

How screwed up is he? That whole segment played out like those couples who appear on Jerry Springer. I have no doubt they told him to make that as dramatic as possible. I am sure they had a hard time finding someone to act like that much of a victim because of lifting weights. The only thing I wonder is if he got paid.

Greg Valentino had bigorexia. This guy just has a stupid hair cut.
