With my Ronnie Coleman genetics, I do a squat workout once a week where I NEVER go to failure on any sets and rest right about 1 minute per set by taking 12 deep breath DoggCrapp style.
On a GOOD day, I get half as many reps as the first set on the second, and I can really only do that if the first set was 10 or fewer reps. I keep getting half as many reps until I get to 1 rep, then strip weight off and repeat.
If I were to go to failure on the first set, I think I would be good for a single on set 2.
I have really good work capacity I dont need to rest 5 mins between sets nor do I even the time to rest that long and I also can 3 sets of 15 reps doing side lateral with 15lbs an I only rest for 30 secs on all isolation movements
