How are you keeping your kids practicing soccer at home?

Hey there, looking for fellow parents with kids that play soccer. I’ve noticed that my boy (age 10) is really into soccer and has enjoyed his summer camp a lot, where they played it quite a bit. I’ve already signed him up for soccer classes starting in September, but he is also nagging me for some practice at home.

I’m not a professional, so I cannot teach him anything, but maybe you have any tips any devices or games that would be great soccer practice for a 10-year-old boy? (EDIT: if you are recommending Youtube, pls leave specific channel recommendations, the one’s I’ve seen are a bit poor quality vids).

I don’t really have a budget, so any suggestion goes. Thanks!

Edit: one thing that I did manage to find and order was a soccer training mat from FPRO, there were some recommendations of it online. Still trying it out, but at least it had a running offer of 20% with a code sporty20. We will try it out and maybe write a review later or something.

I’m sure there are YouTube drills

Juggling the ball. Like kicking it up and not letting it touch the ground for as many kicks as possible.

Kicking the ball at 2 foot x 4 foot targets on a wall or fence. And the 2x4 targets are arranged like the corners of the soccer goal.

just work on general athleticism at home . . jumps, skips, sprints, stopping and starting drills, etc .. there’s endless resources for kids plyometrics online

Work on some passing drills with him.

Start with passing the ball, have him stop it / control it and then pass it back. Do this with both feet, you can work on one side at a time or alternate feet.

As he gets really comfortable with this progress to one touch passing, so pass the ball to him and have him return the pass to you without controlling/stopping the ball first. You do the same back to him. This greatly increases the speed as there is no time between passes.

With these drills you can vary the distance, do some close and then some longer passes.

Next level is to add movement to these drills as when he plays a game he will generally be running onto a ball and not standing still.
When you pass the ball to him have him off to the side and run sideways or forward or diagonal to the ball, you can very this course. Start with a run to the ball and control it before passing back like the first drill above and then progress to one touch pass where he runs onto it and passes straight back. Same as above vary distance speed etc.

If you have a good wall then just have him kick the ball against the wall and he can do all these drills on his own too.

Next maybe add some dribbling drills where he dribbles the ball out and back or around some cones.

As others have said, there are loads of videos on YT and failing that just kick the ball with him and have fun. Set up an imaginary goal between marks and have him shoot the ball and score goals.

Have fun

Put him with a few other kids and a soccer ball.
The magic will happen on its own.
