Hook Grip for Heavy DLs?

I have switched to a hook grip for DLs a few weeks ago and now I feel much more secure with the bar on my hands.

But the problem is,as I up the loading recently,I feel numbness in my thumb during and even after the exercise.

Anyone experienced this before?

By the way,I do DLs for sets of 5.

Yep, I get this too.

I use the hook grip for Deadlifts, however if I’m going over 80% for more than 2 reps I use straps. That way I don’t wear out my thumbs on multiple reps. I only use the hook grip on weights around 60-70% or when I’m doing heavy singles, that keeps your thumbs from feeling like they’ve been ripped off.

you should get used to it in a little while. I’ve been hook gripping since July when I switched to OL and it only hurts every so often. I do jam one of my thumbs once in a while, but that is from putting the bar overhead and not from the pull.

that being said I haven’t really picked up to much weight yet, not anything near my deadlift max really. =D
