Anyone have any advice on making a homemade dragging sled. Can I use an old tire and some plywood or something?
You betcha man. A tire and a piece of plywood inside is a great poor man’s sled. Any tire shop will give you one.
Drill a hole in the tread to attatch an eye bolt and you’re set.
Wave to the neighbors as you drag past!

I have two, an old tire with a plywood flooring which ive used with plates or rocks. And a wood with metal bottom sled. It was a piece of flooring that was being thrown out at my frmr college, it is particle board witha metal layer on the bottom. I drilled four holes, added a piece of pipe, via some thing that was at home depot it has four screw holes and a screw in aread for 1in pipe. I threw an oly sleeve over that, not needed but nice and thats sled number two. Oh aslo added a kind of screwed in loop of metal up front on which to attach the straps. there i have a strap with one cilp to attach to the metal loop and the other end is a loop itself for the actual strap to go through.
Absolutely. An old tire with a piece of plywood in the middle works fine. Just drill a hole in the tire, middle of the tread, and put an eyebolt through with a nut backed by a big washer on both the front and back side. You should be able to find nylon straps that will work at a Fleet Farm, or something similair. Any chain and cable store should have them, as well. (Industrial hoist and lift dealer.) Also, get a couple of carabiners to save wear on the straps.
You could use those kids “plastic shells” that open up and usually 1 can be filled with sand and the other with water. You could drill a couple of holes, thread rope through and add what ever weight you want - plates, sand or even little kiddies.
Like billyboy said a tire works great. iv’e been useing one for a year and a half cause i do my dragging in the street. My neigbors would get a bit upset if i dragged a metal sled up and down the street. You will have to get a new tire from time to time depending on how much you use it.If your on grass you probably have it forever.I built mine like billy and the other guys wedgeing a square piece of plywood with a pry bar in the tire so i could through plates in it.A 45lb. olympic plate will fit right on top with out sliding off.Hope this helps.
I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time, and I’ll probably do it during the spring. I’ve always wondered, if I drag the sled up and down the street in front of my house, how long will it take to get a big black patch going? If the town noticed it, I’d more than likely get bitched at. Anyone who has experience, if you could share, please.
Thanks,
Ryan
