Hockey Strength Training

Anyone have workouts or ideas for strength training regime for hockey players…I am trying to help my brother and deciding a specific path to go with it…Any links to articles, workouts, books about Hockey strength traning would be helpful…Thanks guys!

Hey - where do you live in NY?

Go to my website… (www.StridesStrength.com) click on MultiMedia… click on In-season Hockey Training Article.

We work with hockey players in Syracuse, NY. Mark Powell, MS, ATC, CSCS and I (Mike Derecola, ATC, CSCS) work for the Syracuse Crunch Hockey Team (AHL). Mark wrote an article for elite-fitness a few months back. This may get you started.

We train hockey players using the modified Westside theories as well as using speed and explosive tactics. We have had GREAT results with our pro players as well as our younger athletes.

I have a bud, “Big Tom” that has been playing hockey for years. He is a SHW powerlifter and just uses powerlifting routines. However, he does use a lot of kettlebell work for conditioning.

Tom is currently just over 300 lbs. but was around 350 for several years. Can you imagine a guy that size checking you?

I tried loads of different training for hockey over the years and found the best endurance & movement training I got was from Kettlebell work. I’m not looking to getting massive, just good endurance and strength (& not get too top heavy).

Stuff like swings, split squat, overhead squat, snatch, clean and press & windmills … all good. I throw in some snatch grip deads, dips and pull ups in between sessions. For Hockey (as with any sport) train movement not muscle.

The best sources I’ve came in contact with is:

Westside 4 Skinny Bastards by Joe DeFranco and The Ultimate Off-Season Training Manual by Eric Cressey.

Eric Cresseys book is rather expensive but Joe DeFrancos stuff is for free on his website.

These guys don’t write anything specific for hockey, but rather specific for performance. And in my opinion, that’s a lot better…

it really depends on how many times a week you’re on the ice man.

You play club up in NY? if so for who? we may have played in the past.

lots of posterior chain work, lots. do upperbody pull work. there is a great deal of torso rotation (torque) involved so i’d crush the abs as well. there are a lot of well known coaches out there who have written templates but keep in mind the basic premise is the same. get stronger and develop optimal dynamic flexibility and you’ll be okay.

I founds some urls that might be of some help
