Hitching Only a Few Inches Away from Lockout

I am reasonably fast off the floor and at the midpoint, but when I am barely a few inches away from lockout, I have to hitch in order to complete the rep.

What is the problem?

You have a weak lockout.

It’s nearly impossible to tell for sure without a video. There are a number of different issues that could lead to lockout problems, so we would just be guessing without video.

Can you get video? Most people that fail at lockout have a bad setup or are trying to pull up instead of back.

I have the same problem where I can rip weights off the floor but really have to grind it out once I pass the knees. Getting more lower back work could be of great assistance to you.

Don’t try to pull back, try to push your hips into the bar (hump the bar). Think of it as squeezing yourself under the bar, not standing up with it or lifting it.

Couple thoughts-

-in the process of ripping the bar of the floor and over your knees, it maybe that the weight gets out in front of you or you shift onto your toes a little. This makes for a tough conventional lock and an impossible sumo lockout. Drill tehcnique with several singles at about 80-85% of your max

-bring up your lockout strength; rack pulls and pulling against chains or bands will help greatly.
