Hip Pain When Squatting

I get a pain in my right hip as I reach the bottom of my squats. I’ve tried avoiding squats and letting the hip heal up, but as soon as I resume squatting, the pain comes back. When it’s really bad, it doesn’t just happen when squatting, but any time I have to bend my hip.

Some other points:

-I don’t squat all the way down, just deep enough that the top of my thighs are parallel to the floor

-I don’t think it’s an issue of tightness, I pretty good with most hip stretches, and I can squat all the way down, not to mention the lack of any issue on the left side.

-front squats give me little to no problems. Neither do any hip extension exercises.

-my right leg is stronger than the left, and I have a history of shifting my weight onto the right side, so I think I may be putting to much stress on my right hip relative to the left.

For now I’ll just substitute front squats for regular squats, but I’d like to get back to them, as they’re low for someone my size and with my numbers in other lifts.

Any advice?

Sounds like what I experienced. Look up FAI, and go to a hip doc and get X-Rays. A lot of doctors don’t know about FAI though, so it might be hit or miss with a doc. If you think FAI could be it ask the doc when you see him if he knows about FAI, if he doesn’t see what he has to say anyway but maybe look around for another doc who at least has heard of it. If he does know then listen to what he has to say anyway. I went to an orthopediac surgeon fyi, which I’d recommend.

Thanks, I’m reading an article on it right now. I’m hoping this isn’t it- I don’t want to deal with another surgery. I had one last year and it was the worst.

Anyone else have any ideas as to what it might be?

I agree with checking for FAI. I would also get the low back checked for spondylolysis/spondilolisthesis or other low back issues. Sometimes a nerve in the lumbar spine will cause pain, weakness, or weird feelings in the hip or glutes on one side even though the problem is in the back.
