Hip Pain from Squats

guys im an over 50 plus powerlifter. i have been powerlifting for 3 yrs now. i just recently started having hip pain that radiates down to my rt thigh. im sure its not a a pulled thigh muscle. i was able to finish my last squat session. but the next day i felt a sharp pain and soreness in my rt thigh.

i have stopped doing my squats for now.im not sure what i have but from some of my reading it could be a hip flexor problem. if anyone has experienced a similar problem, i would like to know. if anyone can give me some information about what i can do for it would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not a doctor, and I don’t play one on the internet. But I am over 50, and know that a sharp pain that persists, usually means an injury.

Do yourself a favor and get it checked out by a real doctor.

You might have a tight tensor fasciae latae if it’s in the front. I got one of those and had to foam roll it, stretch it and mostly just wait it out. It happened with the heavy weights and a medium squatting stance. I went light and wide until it cleared up.

If it’s the side or back of the hip it could be a slipped disk. I got one of those too, and that was a problem requiring medical assistance to figure out what to do about it.

I was recently getting pain on the sides of my hips while squatting and it radiated down to the inside of my knee. My PL coach suggested I go to a chiro/ART guy who treats tons of powerlifters and he discovered that my tailbone was knocked-in which then screwed up the entirety of my pelvic floor. Now that it’s tested as no longer knocked-in, that pain is gone.

I would get it checked out, most likely a flexibility/mobility issue, but take it easy, listen to your body and get it checked out byt a doctor/physio

thanks for the responce people. my pain i would say is not constant, but it is in my front upper rt thigh and radiates down my leg.i also have a medium squat stance and was doing well untill this problen occurred.ill stay away from the squat for a few more weeks, i just hate to think about it, but that will give me more time for the bench to improve.

I second the suggestion to go to a doctor. If it radiates down the inside of your leg (and moves to the outside on your calf) it could be something as simple as a pinched sciatic nerve. I got that when I started squatting. The point is that this is not for solving on the Internet.

thanks for the info, i guess ill have to get it checked by the end of this week.

just found out about my injury, its a hip flexor strain. no leg work for awhile, nsaids and rehab. cant bear to think about staying away from the gym. it has also effected my dl workout from the floor.

but i guess i can still do some back work and rack pulls, untill the hip gets better. anyone else experience a similar injury, i would appreciate any input from the forum regarding any new kind of treatment for the injury besides ice and heat.

When you start hittinh the weights again, if you weren’t doing stretches specifically for the hip flexors, it’s time to add them. I do two different stretches for them, but have no idea what they are called. Glad you found out it was just a strain. I had to see a chiro for a similiar issue about a year ago. Couple of adjuystments, prob. fixed.

Hope your back in gym soon.

thanks djsoil, i was doing some stretching, but apparently not enough.the pain has really subsided now, but i’m going to give it more time before i start doing leg work again.its killing me not being able to do leg work, because i was really improving.another set back. but i’m still doing my bench, and some back work. i’ll continue my hip flexor stretches, ice/heat and nsaids.

Had this same hip flexor injury. Unfortunately the only way to fix it is rest.

there is truth in what you say, words of wisdom…rest rest rest. i have not done any leg work now for about six weeks. i barely feel any pain in my right hip flexor, but i dont want to aggravate it, so i guess i’ll wait untill the first week of january and start with light weight to see what it feels like.
