Hip Belt Squats-Are They Good?

I would like to start doing hip belt squats as part of my leg routine. Are they any good? Are they better than sissy squats. I still have trouble doing back squats and front squats, would these be better for me or should I do sissy squats instead? Would I be better off doing the hip belt squats or regular squats? Does anyone have any tips for doing this movement? Where can I buy one of these hip belts, does anybody know? How much are they?

T-mag reviewed the hip belts in one of those ‘stuff we like’ columns. check it out. search for “Ironmind hip belt”.

Are you talking about the Zane Leg Blaster, or what ever it’s called? Certain people seem to feel that squats are really important for overall back development, and maybe this device decreases the back’s involvement? If so, I guess it can be looked at as good or bad.

Ironmind sells a hip belt. The old one sells for $60 and the newer one (more comfortable). Check out their web site (ironmind.com) for details. Chris Shugart talked about it in a recent “Things We Like” column. Go check out the previous issues and see what they say about it. I haven’t used one, but I’ve heard good things about them. Especially for people with back injuries or who are worried about having a competent spotter.

I THINK that Dave Tate sells a belt for belt squats on his website (elitefitnesssystems.com)

I own one myself and really like it.
It does take a little time to get use to. It just feels a little alkward at first, but once you do it’s an excellent exercise. You can also use the belt for weighted chins and dips.
