I wish they had said the words “bench shirt” just once in the article. This kind of shit seriously confuses the layman. Mike Jenkins recently wrote an article about bench press for strongman. He said whenever some random person asks how much he can bench, he just lies and says “700 pounds”, to which they usually reply “that’s not bad”. Seriously…
You’ll love this version of the story then:

“he’s already stronger than just about every player in the history of the National Football League” Again, not saying a 500 raw bench isn’t amazing, even for an NFL player, but there have been a lot of linemen to hit this mark. A lot. Not to mention Big James “Hollywood” Henderson (former NFL player) with a 711 raw bench press IN COMPETITION. In fact I think if a guy like Eric Spoto had been around back when Henderson was competing, he would have put up much more. Henderson had no real competition in his day.
“If the young man known as “The Freak Show” can add 100 pounds to his bench press in a single year, an 1100-pound lift is well within the realm of possibility.”
Goddammit. It took Andy Bolton 3 years to increase his deadlift from 1003 to 1008… I’m wondering if this kid did a 570 bench in a shitty single ply suit, then bought a top of the line multi-ply and “increased his bench” by over 100lbs in one year.
I hate how it sounds like I’m shitting on this kid too. He is fucking amazing, and he hasn’t done anything wrong to deserve any hatin. I hope he does break the bench press world record one day. More power to him. The problem is all the ignorant beyond belief jackasses reporting his feats to the world. They really get under my skin.

Guy at my gym who has a 700 shirted bench has a 500 raw bench. A lot of the pro multiply lifters will hit a 900 shirted bench about the same time as they can do a 600 raw bench. Just for reference. 500 raw bench in high school is certainly amazing. Article is full of bullshit though. They made it sound like he could bench more than all but a couple linemen in the NFL lol.

Ya that kind of rubbed me the wrong way too. Not taking anything away from that kid. He is a killer BPer to say the least but there is quite a difference between raw 700 and geared 700. Both are certainly remarkable though.
massive difference
He’s got chalk all over his neck. That gives a traction-related chalk-vantage, and other scientific things of that nature.
all that coupling and spin
5’10 with short arms definitely hurts his chances at actually being a competitive lineman in college, although if his motor is good and he has decent feet he could probably get a scholarship to a d2/d3 school, get his degree paid for, and then roll off into powerlifting after.

I just wonder what position on the football team he would play? He is strong, just too small for the grid iron. Maybe rugby if he can run.
You make the kid sound like he’s built like a T-Rex. - j/k
He might be able to excel in any sport where strength is the primary skill. Also, I would think that he’d be explosive - guessing that he’d have to be explosive to move 700 lbs. So, maybe he’s a good jumper too?
I can’t even imagine the kind of strength it would take to move 700 lbs. I’m jelly.

the T-Rex comment is priceless.
I have some really long arms, and they were an advantage on the O-Line. Once I locked out no one could break my arms. I had complete control over them.
I am thinking what somebody else said. d2/d3 school or a very small d1 school.

If that. Those D2 and D3 guys are still big as fuck. When a D-lineman has twice your reach, you’re gonna lose every time.

so we’re suspecting the bar positions are quantum? cheater…

One thing that pisses me off about that is that someone like me will probably never bench anywhere near 700 lbs. I would probably have to take PEDs to get his strength level, but that sure as hell does not automatically make me lazy. I just hope he can stay somewhat humble about his amazing talent.
Waiting for responses about this
Yeah that was total bullshit. Obviously he’s a lot stronger and bigger than me, but I could bench 500 raw right now if I had enough dudes deadlifting the bar off of me.
