If you’ve been running 5/3/1 for a while, or Training in general, you’ve probably run across situations where you want to schedule your deload around a vacation or certain life event; for example deloading on week 5, rather than week 4. When this happens I usually repeat a previous week, deload and move on. I’ve got one of these coming up and want to do something different for the hell of it: Sets across @ 20 reps. What percentage of TM would you recommend for this?
Never do something for the ‘hell of it’. Train with a purpose.
If this is a one-off thing that you’re doing to amuse yourself, wouldn’t it be more fun to just wing it?
Like the previous poster intimated, you shouldn’t expect much of a training result from doing something “for the hell of it,” so just pick a number that makes sense and go. Or better yet, try to train productively that week like you would any other.
With that out of the way, I recommend 30-40%.
Thanks Ramo. I Train with a purpose 50 weeks a year and one week annually of something different, even just for the hell of it, isn’t going to derail my Training. I got the idea from Jim’s original BBB 3-Month Challenge write up where he talks about Kroc squatting 415 for 5 sets of 20. I’ve never worked in the high rep range and have this opportunity, so thought I’d give it a try.
I am a little confused regarding what you are asking. I may be off, but are you saying you are going on vacation yet you can still do sets of 20 with a reasonable weight? Why not just continue on as normal then? When I travel and I think there may be a problem working out, i.e. I went to Thailand last year and knew their were no heavy weights, not even barbells, in the gym, I took a nice assortment of bands and got creative.
You will not derail your training and will probably come back stronger. FYI - I replied here to say “nice job” responding to the gentleman’s earlier comments. I like your attitude and often think people are wound a little tight here. 50 “serious” weeks is plenty:)

Ah, no Rave. I have an “extra” week, so to speak, in that I’m going on vacation during week 5 (or week 1, depending how you look at it) and won’t be able to Train at all. I didn’t want to deload on week 4 and then not Train week 5. Usually in this case I’d just repeat one of the previous weeks for week 4 (while trying to better my PR set), deload 5 and move on but thought I’d use this opportunity to work in a higher rep range. Otherwise I’m a huge 5/3/1 believer and have been following Jim’s programming and principles for three years now.
So my question was: What percentage of TM would people recommend for working 20 rep sets?
Appreciate your words and cool attitude. -K
