Hmm, I browsed through a couple of threads and bumped into the ‘magnificent mobility’ DVD by Cressey and Robertson. Would this be a good investment (to prevent further injury or relapse once my back is healthy again)?

In my opinion yes. I have been working my way back from a L5-S1 problem since last April. I can honestly say in the two weeks I have been utilizing the exercises demonstrated on this DVD that I have gained significant flexibility and experience less symptoms post-workout than I have in quite a while.
I would be very careful to not push it too hard and follow a logical program of exercise progressions. Trying to come back too fast will only cause more and potentially worse problems in the future.
Got your email.
Bulging discs are difficult to handle over the internet, as it depends on the direction of the bulge. Some broad recommendations I can make:
- Do not stretch the lower back; in fact, do everything you can to avoid increasing flexion, extension, and rotation of the lumbar spine. You should get the overwhelming majority of movement at your hips, thoracic spine, and scapulae. See mobility in these areas and stability at the lumbar spine (reference McGill’s stuff). I wouldn’t do anything MacKenzie right now - certainly not hyperextensions.
Yes, our DVD is great for hip mobility. With your condition, stay away from the exercises that may lead to some lumbar rotation, including side-lying trunk twist, scorpions, etc. No Cat-Camel, either.
Thank you for the fast reply Eric. I’m amazed to see how helpful you guys all are.
I’m doing the stretches and core exercises daily now (the piriformis stretch really does help, it doesn’t hurt as much now when I sit down).
When can I move over to McKenzie exercises? Or even hyperextensions?
