Help! Training For Upcoming Rugby Tests

So, I’ve played one semester of rugby so far. I walked onto the team and I was starting at flanker the second game into the season. I’ve been lifting for about four years, and this summer I’ve been lifting like a mad man and eating like an even madder man.

The majority of my team didn’t regularly lift and as a result we’re going to be tested every week by our coaches. That said I do little to no cardio. I’m in a bulking phase and I’m up around 218 at 6’0.

The tests are as follows:
Week 1: 600 yard run
Week 2: We’ll be “bleeped” (what the fuck is that?)
Week 3: Standing broad jump
Week 4: 40 yard dash
Week 5: Agility cage (Can someone explain this to me)

I leave for school around the 20th, and practice starts on the 28th. Is there anything I can do to prepare for this training without losing significant muscle mass and weight? What should I be doing? I really want to hold my position and go in there with some impressive stats.

Thanks,
Vince

P.S. I’m currently two weeks into The Waterbury Method, so I would like to work my rugby training into this program.

Week 2: The “beep test” is a fitness measuring test where you have to run back and forth between two poles set about 20m (I think) apart. The pace that you run is set by a “beep” that is played through a speaker so you can hear it.

You have to get to the pole before the beep goes off otherwise you are eliminated. The interval between “beeps” gets shorter as the test goes on, thus the fitter guys who can keep increasing their speed end up surviving to the higher levels.

You’ve probably left it too late to get really fit. A combination of short sprints and 200-400m sprints works well for rugby. You don’t need to do long distance work.
