Help Me Fix my Squat, Please

Good day,

Could you advise on ways to fix my squat? I feel that I have an imbalance problem when squatting. As I go up, I feel that one leg or hip is doing most of the lifting. Are there any drills that any of you would recommend before my squatting session?

Is it always the same leg?

I think a video would help.

@Dr_Grove_Higgins ie very helpful with this; he gave me some advice on a similar situation recently.

A video would massively help but I would say, make sure your hips and hammys are warmed up well before hand and see if that makes a difference.

I have a tighter left side, if I don’t warm it up properly I’m lob sided because it’s stiffer that side.

Good morning,

Can a visit to the physio help to fix the squat?

To clarify language, by “physio,” which do you mean:

  • General practitioner
  • Orthopod/ sports medicine
  • Physical therapist

In any case, it depends. If there’s a structural injury, yes. Who can fix it depends on the nature. If there’s some imbalance or specific weakness, the PT can help out. If you just aren’t great at squatting, you might just need some coaching and practice.

Anyway, and please don’t let this run you off, that question is a little akin to “I have a car; can calling a mechanic help the car?” My point being, why not just upload a video or give us some more detail (preferably both)?

  • Athletic background
  • Current squat
  • Weekly programming
  • How long has this been going on?
  • What other activities does it inhibit?
  • Pain before/ during/ after?
  • Noticeable muscular imbalances
  • Injury/ surgical history
  • When do you shift (eccentric/ bottom/ concentric)?
  • Specifics on exactly what that shift entails

A video would answer a lot of the above, but I don’t think folks can help until they know more.

As someone who has seen a looooooot of physios and other health professionals for various injuries I’d like to say:

A good physio will help you get better from an injury and get good range of motion

But there is no guarantee that a good physio will know how best for you to squat under a BB or even be qualified on the points to teach you.

The same way a good squatting coach might struggle to teach you if you have mobility/ medical issues that need solving first.
