I don’t know. That’s hard to say without seeing what he actually eats and without being at the gym to see how intense his workouts are.
It could be a combination of diet and training. Personally, I do not like to carb cycle during a cut. I like to use very low carbs throughout and replace them with high fat/protein intake. This has worked for me in the past and is currently working for me again.
**Works for me too and what I recommended to him in an earlier post
I think if he did more of a circuit training program with a couple of heavy lifting days, like the link I posted, he’d get out of his slump. The program consists of 1 heavy upper day and 1 heavy lower day.
The other two days are circuit days which you then perform 20-30min steady state cardio. I think this would be more beneficial for him then his current routine.
**Also very similar to what I recommended to him. I think we even both referenced the same routine (CT’s War Room Strategies for Fat Loss)
Also, ditch the carbs. On a cut I start off with only taking in 75g of carbs at most and then eventually work down to 35g.
Just because he’s eating less doesn’t mean his metabolism should slow down. He could still eat 6-7 times a day, the meals would just be smaller and his metabolism should stay at the same rate. As an example, I went on the V-Diet back in January.
**True, but the fact that he is eating so few cals and his fat loss has stalled makes me believe that he needs some sort of measure to get his metabolism going again. He’s getting plenty of protein and already eating 6 or 7 meals a day (at least according to what he has posted).
In total I think the shakes added up to 1.5k calories. Add in the fact I was doing a circuit routine, and I started not only losing water weight, but also fat.
So it’s possible to lose weight with calories that low, but I wouldn’t suggest it. It sucked. And after the diet, even with me being extremely controlling and easing my diet back to normal, I ended up gaining some of the weight back(which I guess most was water), but in total only lost like 6lbs. So yeah…V-Diet is shit, but I was leaner.
Also, he mentions he doesn’t do any form of cardio…which I mean…c’mon…you need at least two days of cardio even when bulking to keep fat gains to a minimum. Not doing any cardio during a cut is sort of shooting yourself in the foot.
**Not sure I agree with the first half of the statement (I think you can get away with no cardio while still minimizing fat gain during a bulk if your nutrition is really dialed in) but I certainly agree that cardio is important in a true fat loss phase.
You have to dip down below maintenance level in order to lose the fat, hence why its a caloric deficit. You can’t be in a deficit if you’re not below maintenance. What you shouldn’t go below is the amount of calories that are in line with your lean body mass. That’s why he should prolly go get it measured and then calculate what it is and then start from scratch.
But, imo, I think it’s pointless to do this cut if he just plans to bulk when he gets back from vacation. [/quote]
Yeah, judging by the photo, I don’t think a two week fat loss program will get him very far, especially considering the overall goal. But if he keeps up this thread we’ll see where he ultimately nets out.
Overall, I believe our thinking is very similar on this.
EDIT: I responded immediately below many of your thoughts, but they didn’t come up in yellow type. If you are interested in reading them I put a ** before every response.
