5-24 through 5-27- Learn to Train Seminar at EilteFTS
The drive up with Andy Deck was uneventful. No more eventful that usual. The dick jokes were flying and the stops for mobility/taco bell were frequent. Rt. 70 from MD to Ohio is the most horrible stretch of road on Earth. So, of course we spent about 450 miles on it.
Friday-
Checked in, said my hellos to a bunch of people I had met at other seminars and some of the sponsored athletes I knew. The morning was filled with presentations from a bunch of very smart people. Learned some stuff but I was really busy freaking out about squatting and deadlifting in full gear in the afternoon.
Squats- CJ Murphy was coaching my group. This was my first time squatting in a multiply suit over multiply breifs. I worked up to an easy 420 before I put anything on. With the breifs and a belt, I smoked 510. Suit and straps down, smoked 600. Smoked 650. Straps up, smoked 700. Stopped there. This is only 30 more pounds that my raw max.
The internet would lead you to believe that I should have done about 1,000lbs because of all of that cheating gear. Well, if I would have gone heavier, I probably would have fucking died. Geared lifting is a billion times harder and more complex than raw lifting. If your technique sucks, you can be a good raw lifter. If it sucks in gear, you are going to die. The weight felt fine. The pressure in my abs and upper back were my limiting factors. I can’t wait to get this shit on again.
Deads- Warm-ups felt easy. I was going to put the breifs on and keep it light but decided to just stay raw and see where I was at… I am glad I did this. Put a belt on at 405 and I could have cleaned it. Same with 495 and 585. 675 was just as fast as 135. Zane Geeting gave me some awesome advice on head positioning right before this and it made my pull about a billion times easier. 765 was loaded up, I pulled the shit out of it, locked it out, then my hand exploded. 765 felt like an empty bar. Nuts.
After I dropped the bar, CJ Murphy pointed out an interesting observation: “That might have been easier with some fucking chalk on your hands.” I didn’t use any the whole time and honestly completely forgot too. When I checked my hand, if was gushing blood and leaving a puddle on the floor so I decided to put some tape on it. Pulls felt great. 765 was no where near a max.
Andy got me into a VIP dinner thing that night. Actually got to sit directly accross from Dave Tate. I made a point not to ask any stupid training questions or any “what would you have done different when blah, blah” questions. Instead, a very tasty meal was had over more dick jokes.
Saturday-
6am- Got into the compound early and did some SLDLs (315 for 2x10, 405x2x10), incline GHRs (5x12), and 45 degree sit-ups w/bands (greenx5x10 each side). The rest of the morning before the seminar was spent helping some other guys load weights, watching Marshall Johnson squat 1010, watching Jermey Frey squat something absolutely ridiculous, watching Molly Edwards deadlift more than 99% of men on Earth, and making several hundred more dick jokes.
Presentations were great again (every strength coach should be made to watch Chad Wesley Smith’s presentation on training athletes). I was distracted by the thought of bench pressing in the afternoon.
Bench- Joey Smith, Matt Kroc, and Molly Edwards were coaching my group. If there is one person on this planet that I want helping me with my bench, it is Joey Smith. I was very excited. Worked up to an easy 365 raw and then got the Jack on. I havent worn this since I got the sleeves tappered and it slid on smooth as butter. Joey set my shirt and I smashed 405 and 455 of 3 boards. Took 500 to a two board. Kroc told me to arch more and drive into my heels harder. This made 525 almost fly out of my hands off a 1 board.
This is right around the time all the shit talking started in my group. Two other guys and myself had a little friendly competition going on. As friendly as benching something heavy, standing up, and then yelling “fuck you” in someons face can be. Anyway, the other 2 guys smoked 525 off a one board as well. I raised the ante with 545 and no board. Joey set my belt in such a way that made me about 3 inches thicker. After he did it, he looked at me right in my eyes and said “Don’t ever tell anyone about how to do this.”
I destroyed 545. Relaxed a little too much off my chest though so it made the lift a little harder than it should have been and it made me slide up (almost off) the bench when I pressed. The other two guys did some other stuff off of one boards and were going and talking shit. So, I said, “Fuck it. 585. I want to end this.” Joey was making fun of me all day for being too laid back so this got him pretty fired up. Got everything set, got under the bar, got my head right.
Stayed nice and tight, brought it down perfect, pushed as hard and as fast as I could, and it locked out. I stood up and said “Fuck both of you guys… the seminar is over.” Both of them ended up hitting PRs and one of them attempted 600 twice but it wouldnt go. Unofficial 2050 total.
After out thank yous, Andy and I decided to drive home that night. This was a horrible idea. The 9 hour drive took 12 because of thick fog, fatigue induced hallucinations, contant stops for food, and rt. 70 being a big peice of shit. Didn’t sleep at all. Got home at 8am. Didn’t want to go to bed and waste my whole day so:
Sunday-5-27-12- DE Lower- 4 weeks out
Warmed up
Squats to low box and soft foam- Suit bottoms
385+175 in bands x 12x2
Deads- did a bunch of lighter weights with 250 in bands.
Stretched. Home. Alseep by 330.
Learning is fucking awesome.[/quote]
Jesus that sounds awesome. Killing shit, great job man!
