Health and Nutrition Careers

I have found such passion in nutrition, supplements, and training. I managed a Vitamin Shoppe and loved it. I love helping people (most people:) and it is such an amazing experience to give advice and help others. That’s really what this site is all about. We all share our thoughts, experiences, etc… to help one another achieve our goals.

So, the point of my rambling is I want to make a career of my passion. I feel if you are passionate about something you will be successful. Anyone have a career in this field that they can share their experiences to point me in a direction. I have an interview at a GNC this week for a management position and it’s a start but only the beginning…

Thanks for the help!

First off, great job on deciding to find a career that you are passionate about. Too often in life people wait until they are retired and say ?Gee, If only I would have done this or done that?, and usually at that point it is too late.
I currently work as an Assistant Manager for a credit union and I am getting ready to finish my degree in Sports Team Management, so I am looking at jumping careers myself. I just had a meeting today with the CEO of a minor league team in town and I will be coming on board as a volunteer/intern in their marketing department. I have my job to take care of my bills, and now I have the opportunity to begin my career and I am very happy.
Best of luck to you on your interview.

Thanks for the kind words and support…I relay the same sentiments to you…I admired a passion to go for your dream.

I guess that’s why I posted because the dream for me isn’t set in stone. I don’t have a solid goal after managing a store. I have a passion for nutrition and supplementation, so managing a store is a good fit. But what is the ultimate goal? I have contemplated attaining nutrition and personal training certification while I am managing the GNC. I would then search other avenues while I gain experience and knowledge.

Some possibilities are:

-Upper management with GNC or maybe Vitamin Shoppe.
-Nutritionist for a hospital, university, or sporting team.
-Opening up my own health and supplement store.
-Working for a major supplement company.

I guess I will continue to brainstorm and communicate with people in the field to learn about the possibilities.
Thanks again…

Also, you may want to consider rep agencies that specialize in sporting equipment. You won’t get rich but you might end up setting up your own agency eventually.

Hey whats up oogie long time no see…Personally i am looking into Personal Training…ISSA is the cert program i chose…home study and widley excepted…ps i also know a guy who owns a gym in your area if you are interested. willing to hire as long as cert is ongoing. Customer of the ol Shoppe he is hehe. Also sport therapy, sports nutrition, coaching doesnt pay all that well but if you can get a job as a prof and coaching you might be able to help out, and use your passion for sports and nutrition, while educating some rugrats ( college kids hehe). Have you tried monmouth? Communications just got a new building, and im sure the track team could use a good PT coach hehe. I owuldnt know havent been on track in 2 yrs. I got the names if it sounds interesting. GOod luck my man…best of luck to ya.
Sometimes breaking into college teaching through sports is easier than going in raw…just like how half the morons get accepted to IVy league schools for sports. You know where to find me…peace

Yo Oogs!

I went from persuing a Graphic Design major, to Networking, to nutrition, and ultimately now to Chemistry. I, myself, am unsure of what I plan to do with a Chemistry degree, but I know I share the same passions as you do.

I do have aspirations to one day work for a supplement company; maybe even start my own company. Who knows?

It’s cool though that you’re getting back into this. If nothing else, at least you are getting your foot in the door.

Have you considered going back to school and just picking up some classes to see where your passion can take you? Maybe even consider getting certified as a personal trainer for the time being and take up Funk’s offer. The guy he’s talking about seems like a really cool dude to work for. Not to mention the money you can make is nice.

Anyhow, good luck with the interview and let us know how it works out. We’re here for ya, man. You know where we are.

OOgie, I hear you. I as well am very interested but am sort of having a tough time picking a direction. Too bad a person can’t get paid for learning from all the great people here! I work in a suplement store too and all I can say is if you really want to get into the heart of all this, it seems to me that a bit more hands on type job rather than retail might be a good place to start. Good luck to you and if you decide on something, I’d be really interested to hear what it is!

Oogie I too have recently decided I would like my career path to lead into the nutrion/health science field. Except fortunately I am just about done with my AA and will start to go for my BA in nutrition within the next year or so. I hope to continue my education for the rest of my life in all subject matters that interest me so, in order to do this I will earn my Masters in nutrition so that I may teach at a university while studying endless subjects. I will say a prayer for your interview and hope that you find the right position in this wide job field for yourself. GET BIG. DA.

Oogie for nutrition you will need to get a BS in Nutrition or Dietetics and then go through the internships to be able to sit for the RD exam. Check out the american dietetic association website for more info on nutrition careers.

I remember ooog back in the day… he and I had some special memories at the good old vitamin shoppe… sigh… the night he held me in his arms and said… “Nah, its alright, you dont have to do shipment” Then he pulled out his big fluffy… well see for yourself.

My dear Lord! Now to make that my buddy icon and I will be set!

See ya at the gym

Oh God!

At first that scared the crap out of me. Then I realized who it was and it scared me even more!

Damn you! Now I’m gonna have nightmares tonight…

P.S. Don’t know if you heard, but good ol’ Randy is actually doing pretty good outside of VS.
