Healing a Torn Pec

I tore my right pec muscle while bench pressing 320 pounds earlier today. The doctor notified me that I have numerous tores in the pec muscle and I am unable to drive or exercise until I consult another physician next Monday.

If anyone has any ideas of how I can accelarate the healing process please let me know. Also, does anyone know how this could have happend because 320 pounds is my normal rep limit. Thanks!

When are you having surgery? Are the tears in your pec muscle 2nd degree? Most serious pec tears are repaired by re-attaching the torn mucles.

Most of the people that I have known that have torn their pecs it was from using a relatively light weight. I know it doesn’t make any sense. What happened with you has many variables and questions to be answered. It could have been improperly warming-up, sloppy form, over-extended your intensity versus your recuperation time limits, etc.,

If it’s really torn you will see blood forming underneath the skin pigment and it will start turning colors. The pec could be hanging down or in an unusual position on your chest laying flat or balled up which is what happens when one tears a bicep.

I’d like to think that your doctor would have you given you home instructions on what to do until next Monday. That’s the part that doesn’t make sense to me.

Rehab is going to depend a lot on the degree of the tear. You will know a lot more after your next Dr appointment.

I had a mild/moderate tear in my left pec 2 years ago. No surgery was required and I benched a shirted PR 639 14 weeks after the injury.

My rehab consisted of lots of acupuncture. Some light cross fiber massage (starting at about the 4 week point) I began benching the broomstick for reps 4 days after the injury. Half reps at first, then full range. I used pain as my guide. I worked up to 500 reps every other day with the broomstick before moving onto the empty bar.

Stay positive, the body is amazing at healing itself.

thanks guys for your input. The doctor said there are several small tears on the right end of my pec about 40%. My pec is swollen 3 times the normal size and a bright purple color about 2 inches in diameter. He did give me intructions to rest but didnt mention surgery as an option. Is this weird? On monday i think i will get a second opinion and see a specialist. thanks

Don’t wait until monday. Do it now.

The window of opportunity for surgery is very small.

Totally agree, if you have access to a surgeon unlike Canada where you have to wait months.

What happens with waiting is scar tissue that forms and reduces your ROM and causes other problems.

The degree of the tears also determines if you are a good candidate for surgery or not. Some tears do not need surgery and will heal with time.

This totally sucks for you but hopefully soemthing can be done
