Hello everyone.
This seems kinda awkward but I honestly had no idea where else I could possibly ask this question… so here goes
I’m planning on shaving my head, and wanted to know what kinds of precautions I should be taking…
I’ve never shaved my head before and I’m worried about sun damage to the skin.
Any advice (other than walking around in a hat when outside) is appreciated, thanks!

Sun damage? Maybe you should rethink this if you are that prone to sun burn. Wearing a hat at all times will also cause it to take longer for the skin tone on your head to match the skin on your face.
sunblock
I have the same problem. I just don’t shave it to the skin (I use a 00 which is very close). Just apply sunscreen on your scalp at first and you’ll eventually not need it as much. A scalp burn really sucks. If you plan to be out in the sun for extended periods of time, wear a hat. If your skin gets really irritated go to a barber the first couple of times.

no, that would never work.
surely, you must be joking.

Everyone should do this at least once in their lives. That said, electric trimmer for the big stuff then call around to BARBER Shops and ask if they do a Razor Shave of the head. In some states only barbers can shave a person(face or head). If none available ask your significant other to do it the first time. Shave like you would your face but lather small sections at a time so the shaving cream doesn’t dry out.
The first time takes about 30min and there will be some nicks from zits and ingrown hairs that you didn’t know you had. After this prepare to be cold, you will know every a/c vent in every building you go into. With some practice I can do my head and face in 15min. Yes sunscreen, it is a Nasty peel if you burn, build up a base tan sloooly. After a while you do come to realize its only hair and the significance people put on it.

Crap. I can shave my head, take a shower and fling myself dry in less time than that.
Use a Mach 3 or similar brand razor. Shave slowly at first, especially in the back of your head, until you get the hang of it.
Funny! Just damn the torpedos, man. Your head will be much lighter than your face. Don’t wear a hat or do sunscreen. Just don’t languish out in the sun for prolonged periods of time. Make sure your skin doesn’t dry out. Use some lotion for a while.

ALWAYS use lotion.

As someone who has never shaved his head I’m expecting to have a pretty white scalp and skin that pale is as prone to sun burn as it gets, wouldn’t you say?
Also, by shaving my head I actually meant trimming it down to the shortest length a machine can, without finishing the job with a razor…
I’m not sure if the sunblock comment was a joke or not, I actually think that would be a good thing to do, though probably a stronger sunblock than what I would normally use for the rest of my body, right?

For me it’s the start of summer! Every year I get a freakin’ burned scalp. And every year I refuse to always wear sunscreen. I do use sunscreen, I just don’t use it all the time.
You’re overthinking this way too much.
I’ve only had sunburn on my head once. This was when I had minimal hair on my head and working outside for 8 hours a day - 5 days a week.
I currently use sunscreen on my completely shaven (with Mach 3 razor) head. No problems.

Surely you cant clean yourself in that amount of time. I’m guessing you need two bars of soap and at least 15 minutes to cover your entire body in a nice little lather.

here is a link to a cool razor although I have not used it but looks functional,
I have always used mach 3
OP, Clipping != Shaving
I shave my head and cheeks in the shower with shaving cream and a Panasonic linear wet/dry shaver. Then I finish with a Mach-3, for the spots that are still rough.
After I get out of the shower, I splash some astringent on my hands, and rub down all the shaved areas. My astringent is with salicylic acid, rather than alcohol. So I hardly have to use moisturizer (though I do live in a humid climate).
This is from roughly June through September. Sort of inline with Michigan’s growing season (frost-free). For the cooler months, I grow one inch, as in the pic on “My T-Nation”.

I don’t understand what you mean by “in some states.” Meaning it’s illegal for me to shave my own head in some states?
I used to shave myself bald for a year at college. I have a head full of hair now, but I can definitely appreciate the effort it takes for a beautiful bald head. Wear a hat or use sunblock for sunny days. I, unfortunately, had scalp burn once and only ONCE.
