My press lockout is real crooked. I was working tonight on evening out the mobility between my shoulders and getting a decent press motion.
Seated DB Press:

55’s 12x
55’s 12x
30’s 25x
25’s 25x

120 8x
120 8x
Incline DB Curls:
25’s 15x
25’s 15x
25’s 15x
Deadlifts:
405 2x (no I didn’t warm up)
405 2x
455 1x
455 2x
455 2x
495 1x This was my only goal tonight, to see how 5 plates felt with hookgrip. It felt good… too good in fact. So good that Chia literally forced me to go up in weight.
515 1x Again, too fast. Chia threatened my life if I didn’t pull heavier.
540 1x I really wanted to stop here. I mean I’m right in the middle of Smolov for crying out loud. “Don’t ever let your program keep you from getting stronger.” says Chia.
560 1x PR Holy shit. I have no idea how this was here tonight, but it was. Four days after a full meet where I pulled 550 for the first time. In the middle of Smolov, the day after hitting a volume PR on squats. The second week in my life I’ve ever tried hook grip. Who knows, but if it’s there, don’t waste the opportunity; I almost did. I’m lucky I have good training partners who wouldn’t let me pass this up.
Obviously a deadlift PR always feels amazing, but this feels especially huge for me. My one true lifting goal is just to deadlift 600lbs. That’s the one strength related thing where if I got that, I feel like I could die happy knowing I at least got that strong. That’s the lift that keeps me awake at night. And for a year and a half my deadlift was painstakingly plateaued at 530lbs. In the last 3 weeks I have made a 30lb increase on my pull. For the first time in my life I’m actually closer to 600 than 500.
I attribute the string of deadlift PR’s to two things. One is much more sub-maximal training. Way more volume with around 400 and staying much farther away from 500. This allowed me to discover some good form tweaks and queues and actually implement them since I was using light enough weight to train my body to perform the technique correctly.
Number two is actually hook grip. I never would have guessed it, but when you pull mixed grip, or even with straps, the bar is pretty deep in your hand. This is how you get the strongest grip on it, you gotta get a lot of your hand around the bar. In hook grip though the bar is pretty much just in your finger tips. Your first two fingers are hooked securely around your thumb. This actually cuts the range of motion by a couple inches. It’s that much farther down my hand. That my not sound like a big deal, but my sticking point is literally only about the last 4 inches of my lockout. So if you cut a couple inches off of that, you’ve cut my sticking point damn near in half. It was a way bigger deal than I expected it to be.[/quote]
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
I feel like we’re the only ones here who are this sentimental over a 600lb pull. lmao.
