Having 'Fun' While Training

Yeah buddy! Why would you do something recreationally if you don’t enjoy it?
To look awesome and to get work.

People like that are the crowd Planet Fitness is catering to.
For your definition of “fun” maybe. Fun to me is effort so intense, the senses fail and all that remains is force of will against force of gravity. I don’t think Planet Fitness caters to that flavor of fun.

Well more power to you. But see my definition of fun above. All else is secondary to the pain/fun.

All business for me. It’s internally “fun”… but I hate anything that breaks my focus and makes my session feel like a series of commercial breaks when all I want to do is enjoy the show.

You all seriously enjoy lifting heavy weight? Really?

I hate it. I only lift becuase I want to be bigger, stronger. If I could take a pill tomorrow and be 275 lean, I’d do it.

Who in their right mind would enjoy getting up at 3:30 AM?

Its a freaking job, I just like the ROI.

Bingo.

That shit is painful…and most of us do it because the joy is in challenging ourselves, NOT in trying to have fun in the gym.

I remember seeing that often though…people claiming they didn’t like going to the gym because it was “boring”.

I could give a shit how boring it is. This is how you get really big muscles. That is pretty much all that matters.

I think you run into problems if you focused so much on “fun” that 5 years later you look the same or worse.

Getting up before 6am and hitting the gym twice a day ain’t easy and dare I say, is often NOT “fun”.

If the desire to reach a goal wasn’t there, why would I do that?

I do. Really.

If there was a pill that I could take that would give me my desired physique I’d take it… but I would still lift cause I enjoy it.

You must be young. See me when you’re older and your joints hurt so bad you need a joint.

I’m going to Slightly disagree with some of this since I lift for power and not so much for size even though it’s a added benefit.

When I train it’s for a targeted goal. A goal that may be months years down the line. This can get boring and your goal can be thrown off track if you are not focused and getting down to business everyday it’s work. I get much of my fun in the gym from what I call a transfer of power. On days when I feel the weights power was beat down by my will and a 225 x 5 MP became a 245x5.

On days like that I walk around like I’m on the red carpet. Shyt once after a strict 255 MP I racked the weight turned around and was pissed no cameras went off. Hell I walked around with a grin waiting for to be asked “WTF you so happy about?”

That Shyt is fun no pill can replace that.

I would go to the gym and do one legged bosu ball squats and overhead extensions with a 2lb kettlebell. Ya know, just to fuck with the guys working their asses off. lol

Sadly this is exactly what I was thinking.

When it take two hands to drink your coffee cause your elbow tendonitis is flared up, or your hip hurts so bad you feel 90.

They think I do that now.

I train twice a day. The gym near my house is the one I do my lighter morning workout at.

I had one guy come up to me asking how I made that type of progress when I am in and out the gym in about 20min everyday.

@460 - no doubt I enjoy a heavy lift but don’t confuse that with a 4x10 series. While incline pressing this morning my elbows gave out well before my chest was finished.

You have to train smarter the longer you do this…which is why I laugh at everyone under 25 who is making jokes about me using an HS machine.

That shit is why I’ve been lifting this long and reached this size with relatively minor injury directly from training. Most people can not say the same after ten years of this.

For you younguns, a joint is a really really skinny blunt.

I have to imagine you enjoy the sacrafice that goes into what you do, even if only a little. Even if I’m not the biggest squatter in the gym (lol) I take pride in the work itself… just my humble opinion.

Nope, again the sad thing is after so long and early mistakes in my 20’s the damage is done. Now if I quit I just get fat and STILL have the joint pain. I spend more time now doing corrective exercises and foam rolling than actual heavy lifting.

It is definitely one of the better parts of my day during the week. I am an athlete at heart. I use to enjoy the training aspect of sports. Since I stopped playing sports lifting has filled that void. Has a cyclical aspect to it as well. Sometimes ill be all about the gym other times not so much. Got no choice.

That being said I am a get in get out type of guy. If I know you ill say what’s up and have a convo. If you are some random 45 year old dude FFS I don’t want to hear what you did over the weekend.

I loved lifting, just about everything about it when I was 19-21. Then had an accident and took me 5 years to be able to lift once a week and another 5 of trial and error to get to where I can lift heavy nearly everyday of the week. A lot of effort and pain went into this. Now when I think maybe I will skip a supplemental evening workout (I do not skip a main morning one unless I have basically no choice) I ask myself, Did I do all that work for this?

I am going to go workout right now, in fact. Screw grading papers.
