Hardcore Essentials

Congrats, lots going on, life is good!

After taking my 3 year old for a bike ride around the neighborhood I powered up with with some arginine, beta alanine, and a huge cup of coffee then managed to eek out some energy for lifting.

T-Handle Swings:
110 lbs x 2 sets x 25 reps

DE Squats (30 seconds btwn sets):
135 lbs x 10
225 x 5
315 x 8 sets x 3 reps

ME Trap Bar Deadlifts:
138 x 5
228 x 5
318 x 3
408 x 2
498 x 1
518 x 1

Standing Crunches:
80 lbs x 20 reps

Felt great to get back in the groove and I have much more in the tank for trap bar deads. Went pretty fast tonight and didn’t over-do it because I’m adjusting to a hectic schedule.

Solid work. How do you like the trap bar deads and what do you get out of them?

james

Trap bar deads are a great substitute lift to work on conventional deads for me. I especially like the neutral grip. I am getting significant overload with the trap deads and which I think will add to my regular deads and maybe squatting. Soon I will doing deficit work with the trap bar deads too.

Started extremely late tonight but the lifting was decent although not my best.

T-Handle Swings:
110 x 2 sets x 25

DE Football Bar Alternating Grip Bench (1 min btwn sets)
33 lbs bar x 25
123 x 10
153 x 8 sets x 3 reps

Football Bar Overhead Presses:
33 lbs x 10
83 lbs x 5
123 x 5
173 x 3
193 x 3

Football Bar Close Grip Benches Giant Set w/35 lbs Dumbell Hammer Curls:
143 x 3 sets x 12/3 sets x 15

Standing Crunches:
80 lbs x 20 reps

I really like the football bar. Stabilizing the bar is different than a standard bar so there is added resistance to deal with which I think will add to my bench. I also like the way the football bar is taxing my triceps and seeming to work my biceps as well while giving my chest and shoulders great work.

Gorilla,

Just got caught up on your blog, first congratulations on the baby girl, my kids are 3 years apart which I figure is just enough time to remember how to change diapers and deal with sleep deprivation so good luck and enjoy. Second, what do you think those KB swings help you with the most? I was just wondering if I, as an older fellow myself, would be better served by doing them more than sporadically or if they are specific to a goal you have.

Brian, I will answer on your thread.

Vanilla,

Thanks for the info, it was very helpful.

I love implements that help me get stronger. No problem Brian.

Started lifting extremely late for a weekday considering I was supposed to go to work early today, but it’s raining so I am lucky and got to sleep in.
Last night’s lifting went like this:

T-Handle Swings:
110 lbs x 2 sets x 25

Front Squats:
135 x 10
225 x 5
315 x 3

ME Front Squats using Simmons Zercher/Front Squat Harness(26 lbs):
431 x 1
501 lbs x 1 (Near Max-Almost pooped my pants)

ME Zercher Squats from pin just below knees(using Zercher/Front Squat Harness-26lbs):
161 x 10
251 x 5
341 x 3
431 lbs x 3 (This was hard work)

DE Snatch Grip Deadlifts from pin at 1/2 shin using wraps (1 min btwn sets):
135 x 10
225 x 5
315 x 8 sets x 3 reps

Standing Crunches:
80 lbs x 20 reps

My abs and mid section were aching following this lifting. Later on, my glutes were hurting from all the hip work. This was one of the best lifting sessions I’ve had in a while. Ben Bruno’s article on snatch grip deadlifts was great and using his idea payed off.

Nce work! I did the Snatch grip Pulls from pins today too… Really enjoyed the lift and felt like I got alot out of it… I was hoping after reading that article that somebody else would try it on here.

Thanks notbig, I try to use useful things I find in training articles and nutrition articles here.

Last night’s lifting went well:

T-Handle Swings:
110 x 2 sets x 25 reps

ME Football Bar Close Grip Bench (Hands 4 3/8" from center-8 3/4" apart):
33 x 25
123 x 10
173 x 5
193 x 3
228 x 1 (PR)

ME Deadstop (Start) Bench (Olympic Bar) From Pins 4" Above Chest:
135 x 5
185 x 3
225 x 3
245 x 3

Tricep Push-Downs Giant Set w/Football Bar Hammer Curls:
80 lbs x 5 x 12/103 lbs x 5 sets x 8 reps

Standing Crunches:
80 lbs x 20

Felt pretty good and strong after this lifting. My arms were really tight and my chest was blasted.

Good work in here as always GV. Might have to invest in a Football bar myself.

I think the Football bar is one of the best pieces of training equipment I have.

Workouts are looking strong GV. Getting them in before the new baby arrives.

My wife delivered Friday night so our family has welcomed in a beautiful baby girl. This of course means my lifting is a bit on the delay for a few days but maybe tomorrow, if I’m lucky, I may have a chance to get back to training.

Huge congrats GV. That’s awesome news.

Congrats on the baby girl. I assume you’re firmly wrapped around her cute little finger already.

Congrats on the new arrival!
