Sorry for the delay in posting. I’ve been worn out and unable to do much since the meet. My weight was 213 lbs at weight ins. I totally screwed up my first attempts on the squat and bench. I didn’t wait for the command to squat on my 1st squat with 525 so the squat was disqualified. Decided to just do the 525 lbs again on my 2nd attempt which wore me out for some reason and my 3rd attempt with 600 bombed. I should have done 565 for my 3rd attempt but I wasn’t thinking rationally. I will do more next time. So, here is my successful squat with 525 lbs:
My first attempt on the bench with 270 was easy but my dumb ass lifted my heels so it was disqualified. I got the 270 easy for my 2nd attempt and then did 285 lbs for my third attempt which was also easy. I left 15 lbs easily to be had but I was just playing it safe because my energy and mindset was completely off by this point. Here is 285 lbs:
I opened with 525 on the deadlift which was easy then went to 565 lbs for 3 greens but I failed with 600 this day. The dead video will not load for some odd reason. I did my deads with no belt or other equipment.
Oddly enough, to me, I won my weight class with a total of 1375 lbs. I did bench 5 lbs more than the last meet in July but it should have been a 20 lbs PR. I learned how bad of an idea it is to eat a big meal at Longhorn Steakhouse the night before a meet and I learned that I need to regulate my energy at the meet better than I did.
On another note I had a great time with the other lifters in the federation, Raw United, and met some very nice people. It was a good meet and a good barometer to base my training on for a much bigger total at the next meet. With a few small tweaks I could have lifted 100 or more pounds for my total and I will soon. The next year my goal is to lift safely, smartly, and to make great increases for several meets with much higher totals. I may even do another meet in a month or so.
Thanks to everyone for the support. I promise next time not to disappoint with such low numbers. Other positive notes from this meet and the training leading up to it are that I did not get injured at all, I am recovering nicely now, and I have locked on to
Bulgarian (High Frequency ) training for the foreseeable futrure. I had a nice talk with a great lifter about Bulgarian training and he told me to get fractional plates for smaller daily training max work and that will make a huge difference in making new PRs. I have heard of it before and now I am convinced so I am off to get 1 pound plates or even smaller if I can find them.
Nice work GV. I know you aren’t thrilled with the results but a 525 squat and a 565 dead are strong. Definitely had another 15 in you benching. Onward and upward!

Those aren’t low numbers. And everyone who has done a meet knows how much more difficult lifting conditions can be on the platform than in the gym. So congrats!
Also, you can get fractional plates from Iron Woody. I love mine.
Nice work. Don’t forget most people will never get out there and do what you do. I always look at it as the challenge is against myself. As hard as you train 2014 should be big.
Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I needed a moment of self loathing to get myself fired up for more training. Feeling great this morning and ready for a deload week.
Thanks kpsnap for the reference. I’ll get on that site today.
Rick, I’ll be posting the Bulgarian site on your page.
You all are right about the meet conditions being a different stage than in the gym. I should know that after years of training and competing but my expectations are high and I want to be super-man. Funny thing is my cape doesn’t materialize when I want it to most of the time.
A little late GV but even though you had a lot left in the tank and technicalities effed you its still impressive. I mean you fucked up and still hit some strong numbers! It’s in our nature to never be satisfied… Just realize those are still excellent lifts
Thanks folks, yeah I feel the bench was simple and I may go for a paused 300 today just to see if I can. I’ll video if I can. Definitely going over 300 lbs on the bench in my next meet.
