Hand Gripper Strength

I’ve just started grip training, mainly with the heavy sports “heavy grips” hand grippers. I’ve built up to around 20 with the 200lbs model in a couple of weeks, and i’m curious as to how they compare with the iron mind captains of crush grippers. Is there anyone who has used both the HG-300 and the COC #3, if so, could you safely assume that someone who can close the HG-300 could close the COC #3?
(ironmind gives the strength of its #3 @ 285lbs)

Yes I would say so. I can get the 250 just fine but that damn 300 won’t completely close

I’ve never used a COC#3 but I’ve heard that they don’t equate to the Heavy Grippers. I think the COC#3 is a step up from the HG300 (got that off of some dude in London Kettlebells, who sell COC grippers, so take that as you like).

The #3 is a serious step up from the HG300.

Don’t do such high reps. You’ll do much better with lower reps and harder grippers.

I think that the HG seem easier than the COC. I could close my HG200, but my friend’s COC #2 had a larger ROM to close than the HG200. I don’t know about the 300 because I still can’t close the HG250. I am within a cunt hair of closing it, but no cigar yet.

I have closed the HG300 but have yet to close the COC #3. The HG 300 would be a good transition gripper between the COC #2 and the COC #3.

thanks for your opinions, its good to know where i stand in the grand scheme of grip strength. I’m only doing such high reps until monday when my HG-250 and 300 arrives, i’m assuming i’ll be able to handle the 250, but the 300 should remain a challenge for a while…plus it’ll probly rip the skin from my fingers.

Ugh…No wonder my fore arms are so skinny! I’m only on coc 1…ayeeee

Definately a big difference. Also, the Heavy Grips are known for quite a bit of variability. My dad’s HG250 is about the same as or just under my COC#2 but my HG250 is much harder than the #2.

Plus, I find the sweep is much easier on the HGs compared to the COC. If you are looking for some more stepping stones for your grippers, COC is now making 1/2 grippers, i.e. COC#1.5, 2.5, 3.5.

Not to veer too far off topic, but I was pondering this when my new Ironmind catalog arrived in the mail:

Why are grippers measured in the somewhat cumbersome measure of pounds? Wouldn’t percentiles be a lot more relevant and transferrable? Aren’t their more than enough people out there closing dynos and grippers?

tyler grips have helped my grip a lot…tylergrips.com is the web-site I believe…posted a thread earlier asking if anyone had heard about it…will definitely be hitting up ironmind this christmas as hints to the wife…!

…sorry!

I can close the HG 300 once and hold for a good 5 secs with right hand.

I have three brands of grippers: heavy grips, captains of crush(ironmind), and beef builder grippers.

Out of all three, I found that the beef builders and captains of crush seem better in build quality than my heavy grips.

My 150lb heavy grip does not even compare to the captains of crush #1. My heavy grips gripper feels like it is at least 20lbs lighter than the coc, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of the line was like that.

Heavy grips are great for the money, but their poundages listed per gripper are off and do not measure up. If you want a real gripper, get a beef builder or captains of crush from iron mind.

for all of you who have been using the grippers, would you say its an essential part of your gripwork, or would heavy holds and forearm work be enough in the long run?

p.s. sorry about the hijack

I went to the Ironmind site and couldn’t find any of the .5 grippers. Any suggestions?

Any comments on the Ivanko Supergripper?

I’ve thought about buying one to save money and have adjustability.

I’ll try to answer a few of the last questions

evansmi - Not essential but fun as hell. Don’t make grippers your sole grip exercise. Thick bar work, sledehammer levering, heavy wrist roller, etc are just some of the fun you will get hooked on once you start with the grip work.

TornadoTommy - Just go to the online store(link at the top of the main page). On the left blue bar, click on the Crushed to Death grip tools - Then just click on the COC link and scroll down.

Snake - A lot of people have said good things about it. But they say even better things about the Ivanko SuperGripper Devil’s Advocate. Mimics a gripper better and the shape is less hard on the hands.

Hope this helps.

Hmm…, it worked this time. Thanks for the info!

I have also closed the HG300, but have yet to close the COC #3. The HG300 has a shorter sweep to it.
