Hamstrings/Good Oils/Periodization

Hey Guys,
Here I am with yet another series of questions. You’ve been a GREAT help, so keep it up. Right now, I am doing well tracking my meals, trying to combine Prot/Fat, or Prot/Carb and not mix carb/fat. Anyway… I’m taking about 14pills (1tbsp) of fish oil, and 14pills of Flax everyday. Is that enough?
I also had a question about Ham excersizes. I was talking to one of those trainers from 24 hour fitness (i assume they don’t know much) and he says that The Goodmorning, straight legged deads, and other movements are TERRIBLE for your back… is this true? Will I sustain injury if I do them properly? Also, how can I learn to do excersizes properly? I was looking into maybe buying Ian King’s Killer Leg Exercizes video, and possibly his “how to write strength Training Programs” videos (the latter cost $237, kinda pricy). Is there any definitive source to teach me how to do cleans, pulls, snatch pulls, jerks, and whatever the hell else olympic moves there are? I want to have a wide selection of Excersizes available and know how to do them the right way, so how can I find them? I’ve read on here PLENTY, and have found some new ones… but anything will help. Thanks.

Kyle

Although Im no 24 hour fitness personal trainer - I can assure you that if you learn and execute these excercises with good form - you will certainly be okay. I do have one tip for you though - stop buying flax oil caps (unless of course you are traveling and it is more conveinient to have caps) - buy it in a bottle because it is way cheaper. You can find it at any health food store and if you cant find flax - look for linseed oil - same thing.

Ian’s Killer leg video provides the instruction you’re looking for. I have most of his other videos and they will be largely redundant as far as the exercises you’re interested in. As far as Olympic lifts, the best buy on the market is probably Art Drechsler’s Weightlifting Encyclopedia Video (wlinfo.com). It costs about $40 and is about three hours long. It covers the classic competition lifts as well as numerous derivatives (i.e. power cleans, power snatches, etc.). The production quality is also good, ecellent picture and sound. While I think most people can learn a basic power clean from the video, you should probably try finding a coach who can provide you with the finer points of technique for some of the lift variations, although I admit such coaches are rare.

Ha ha - this ‘trainer’ forgot good old fashioned DL, and squats are not only bad for your back but also a killer for your knees. And never lift any weights over your head, don’t ever do snatches and jerks or anything explosive and most of all never, never ever use heavy weights. :))))))))))) (What did I forget).
Forget all that - the best guideline is how safe you feel. If anything ‘doesn’t feel right’ or gives you any other kind of problem either work on your form until it does feel good or do something else. Other than that you can do just about anything you want with weights as long as you can control them. The olympic weightlifting moves are pretty complex (at least when done correctly) so you should probably find a coach that has some expertise in that and is willing to teach you.

I’ll answer your oil question. The latter can all be found in this here website. The search engine can be a pain in the ass, but the info is there. Taking pills for oils is not economical, or easy. Buy your oils in liquid form that you take with a tablespoon. I would further recommend, Udo’s Oil, it is a mixed oil in good ratios of all EFA’s.

The Killer Leg Video is a good buy. As far as the lower back/hamstring exercises go, they’re all fine if you remember to keep good form. I’ve been doing them all for about 25 years now, and have never had a lower back problem. Go for it.

How do u guys take the flax oil or fish oils with out throwing it back up? Every time i take flax oil i gag i dont throw up tho, but is just disgusting and when i mix it with protien or something the smell of it stays in the glass i used to drink it with and in the blender. how do u guys deal with that?

For fish oil, I use caps but still get the nasty burps. For flax oil, I can only do it without yacking if I put in this shake. 2 scoops chocolate AP, 2 scoops Designer Whey unflavored, 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter, 2 tablespoons flax oil, about 12 oz water and lots of ice cubes. Tastes like a chocolate peanut butter ice cream milkshake. I have one of these every single day.

With a good old regular tablespoon - have some back bone for crying out loud and quit’re whining and spoon it down.

Eddie, try the Dale Alexander emulsified fish oils. They come in mint and orange flavors and they are fairly cheap. I haven’t tried the orange flavor, but I like the mint. I can’t taste any fishiness at all. Has anyone else tried them?
