Of course we have all seen the guys that can squat or DL over a 1000 pounds, but its always one or the other. Does reaching that level just take too much specialization in the one lift to do so in the other? I was thinking that Im not sure ive ever heard of anyone squatting and deadlifting both over 1000 pounds. Is that possible?
You don’t know what you’re talking about. ‘The guys’ that can DL 1000 lbs include Andy Bolton and Benedikt Magnusson. That’s it. Only Magnusson has done it raw. Bolton has squatted 1200 lbs equipped. Nobody has squatted 1000 raw. So out of the 2 guys that can pull 1000, 1 has squatted over 1000.

Arent there more guys than that, that have pulled over a 1000 though? And i dont know much about it your right, it was simply a thought and I wanted to see what anyone else had to say about it.
No, that’s it. The world record is only 1015. And like I said, one of the 2 guys has squatted over 1200 lbs. So I don’t think your observation is correct. There are certainly lifters out there who are much better pullers than squatters, and vice versa, but there are plenty of great lifters that excel at both as well.

No, I believe you are thinking of strongman competitors doing tire deadlifts or 18" deads over 1000. it’s super impressive, but worlds apart.from an actual powerlifting deadlift–those are essentially just lockouts or high rack pulls and there sre a bunch of.guys eho csn do that, relatively speaking.
I think it is definitely possible to do both in one meet. it just takes so much energy you have to be perfect that day. Too many people squat.over 1000 and pull in the 900s for it to not be possible physically, but it takes pretty much the perfect day AND the perfect beast, snd thst is why we haven’t seen it in a single meet yet.

Ok, that was my next question to see if Boston’s 1000lb pull and squat where in the same meet
Rob Wilkerson did a grand raw unless you aren’t counting it for some reason (know all the depth talk)

I forgot about that. Yea the depth on that squat is stupid high, but for the purposes of this discussion it counts. Regardless, OP was talking about having seen plenty of guys squat 1000, so I assumed he was really talking about geared squats.
I was hoping Malanichev would be added to that list last night at Capo. I think his best is a 993lbs raw squat
dont forget Ed…

It’s about 4 inches high by my standards, but his femur is probably at the same angle as a smaller guy squatting right to parallel.
Yea, I just figure since his thigh is the size of my fat guy torso that it would be impossible to judge correctly. I wasn’t even thinking about geared lifting when I answered that, just hated to see Wilk’s lift left out. I’ve never seen him deadlifting so I assume it isn’t close to a grand or anything. Would such a strain to squat and pull a grand in one day!

I was assuming he was talking about raw.
No one has done it raw, and off the top of my head I can’t think of anyone who is particularly close either except maybe Andrey.
IMO the closest man we’ve ever had to achieving the holy grail of a half ton squat and deadlift raw was Mark Henry. Despite never getting to 1000 on either he had a 953 squat and a 903 dead in competition. Also reportedly hit a 1003 squat in the gym, so I feel like maybe if he’d focused all his efforts into powerlifting and stayed in for longer he could have been the guy to hit them.
Nowadays…
Big Rob Wilkerson has improved his deadlift greatly, but he’s got a long way to go. He’d also need to do another 1k squat to a better depth than his first imo and probably everyone else’s opinion as well. Benni Magnusson has the deadlift, but I don’t know if he could ever get his squat up that high. I honestly think we’ll see Koklyaev hit a 1000lb deadlift in the near future. Again though, his squat is in the 800’s like Magnusson’s; and that is a long way to go.
Our best hope is obviously Malanichev. He is so close on the squat, and he’s just got to keep plugging away on his deadlift. He may get there.
Finally there’s the darkhorse Ray Williams. He will squat 1000 raw to depth I believe. His deadlift though is a ways off being in the 800’s. The silver lining however is if you’ve ever seen him deadlift, he’s basically stiff legging 800. So he may have a lot of potential to get his pull farther into the stratosphere.

Actually, I assumed the OP didn’t know what the fuck he was talking about in the first place, since he said ‘we’ve all seen all those videos of people squatting and DL’ing 1000’. Since there are exactly 2 videos of 1000lb deadlifts, I figured he’s at least seen several 1000lb squat vids. Which would have to be equipped, obviously. Whether the OP knew he was watching equipped vids or not, I don’t know. I tend to think not. I don’t think he has much of a handle on the sport of powerlifting, and that he just wanted to get a conversation going about specialization, based on observations he thought he had made. Like someone else mentioned, there are 1000 lb tire deadlifts out there, and I’m not sure OP really understood how different that is from a PL deadlift.
I think the part of your response that I didn’t quote was pretty spot on. A raw squat and deadlift over 1000, or 950 for that matter, would be tremendous in the span of a lifting career. I doubt we’ll see it in 1 meet anytime soon.

His morning shit is my size
I think Paul Anderson did 1160 weighed and witnessed, but with a load hung from the bar, and claims that he did 1200, and he supposedly DLed 1000 with hand hooks.

He uses that as a weight releaser training technique. He goes down with 1000 and comes up with 950.
How much does he weigh anyway? I’d be interested to see the top squat loads, including a percentage of bodyweight in the total. Maybe 3/4 bodyweight added?

Nice summary. I really think Koklyaev is going to pull a grand raw. he’s done 750x10 & 865(?)x5 both raw, and his pull is 936 ish in pounds if I remember correctly…not sure thats right. But I really think he’ll do it. Not sure i ever see hkm squatting a grand raw though. 750x10 just sickens me too. Ray Williams might have shot, but not for a while yet…hard to tell with his pull style in that maybe he pulls much strongrr eith a pseudo stiff , but I can’t help but think if he got his hips a bit lower he’d get monstrously more leg drive . dunno.
