Gym Threatens to Remove Heavy Wts

I dont care what the research says about noise while lifting and I dont care if its only in my mind. I dont grunt for attention and I try to be mindful of others but sometimes it just comes out. I even started doing my heaviest lifting during off hours to be considerate. And I am not sub 200 so I dare any pansy ass to come complain to me about it. This aint no fucking library. Have you ever seen Ronnie lift?

Ohhhhh brother.

Yeah, I guess if you put it in that context and are getting smashed, you better yell.

Most people would not fault you for letting out some noise as your life flashes in front of you.

Easy, tough guy.

A grunt is a grunt, but there’s a fine line.

The way I think about it, think about if you go to Sears and buy something really fucking heavy.

You go out to the parking lot and try to get into the back of your pickup…do you lift it and scream? Do you have to psyche yourself up to lift it?

C’mon. This shit only happens in gyms.

This thread is confusing the shit out of me.

Were you yelling/screaming, or talking normally?

Did the manager come up to you and say “if you have to talk during a workout, we are putting away the heavy weights”?

This thread makes no sense.

That’s very true. Good point.

My gym went out of business when LA Fitness moved in down the street, so Planet Fitness took over the old space. So I checked out Planet Fitness and was told their weights would not go above 85 pounds and no yelling or even grunting was allowed, nor dropping weights on the floor. They were quite proud of their so-called “No Intimidation Zone”. I swear to God, that’s what they called it. I just laughed at them and found someplace else. Someplace without a “Mediocrity Zone”.

You guys should sign up for one day at Planet Fitness just as a joke.

China Doll, as for dodge ball, when I was in school that was just an opportunity for sadistic jocks to prey on the weak kids. What a joke, like most PE classes.

The screamers and yellers do it because they’ve seen others do it. Is it any easier on a newbie on a max lift of 200 lbs vs an experienced lifter on a max lift of 500 lbs? A max effort is a max effort - it’s the maximum that the body can lift, no matter the weight. I think it’s pointless at any level, but isn’t it hypocritical to say it’s ok to scream and yell only at loads above a certain weight?

DB

That is indeed annoying. We have some of that going on but not a whole lot thankfully. And I would be the first one to say something about that.

AA-

You are an exception.

At most of the gyms I frequent 165lb, 16yr olds curling 25lb dumbbells, wearing wife beaters from Kids R’ Us, hitting each other in the chest to psych each other up for a set of curls seems to be the rule.
Good point. I guess the only real difference I see is if you do it for the sole purpose of drawing attention to yourself. And I think for any true lifter that is not what its about. If a grunt comes out during my heavy routine in the process of pushing weight, I dont need some jackass to come over and tell me to be quiet (which doesnt happen in my gym). But if I am acting like an idiot going around yelling and screaming for no reason I will admit I am the first one that needs to get slapped.

Have him start yelling on the tread mills and spinning equipment. Maybe they will get rid of them as well.
Pretty funny, but it will never happen. I find yelling and noisemaking more entertaining than distracting, as long as it doesn’t startle me enough to abort my lift and get hurt. Then the next noise will be the sound of his teeth bouncing off the floor and me running like hell for the door.

I vote for Option 3! It has the greatest quality entertainment potential!

Kuz, where are you from in CT? I know of a few…

Glastonbury. I know of South Side down in Stratford (Cressey works out there and I have been meaning to hit him up for a workout with those nuts), but not much else outside of that, at least in the Hartford area…
I lift at southside, and 3 of my training partners make the trip from hartford every single friday. I have a 1.5 - 2 hour drive from NY every friday. It’s worth it.

Damn this sounds like my post a page or so back. The original story keeps changing, doesn’t it?

You have to keep in mind that a gym is a business. And if this is the business model that is making them money and paying their bills and feeding their children then it is their right as the owners of said business to run it as they see fit. Your right as a consumer is to find another business to conduct business with. This is the beauty of free enterprise, both parties are free.

If you don’t like it, then dont pay them and move on. But you can’t be too upset at the company making money, because thats what companies do. And if the companies didn’t make money, none of us would have jobs, and with no tax revenue, the gifts that most people have come to accept for a given would not be here (police, fire, paved streets, street lights, etc…)

I haven’t seen either of these posts answered yet, either.

This is a load of crap!
How on earth can they have the right to remove heavy dumbells if you pay a certain amount of money per month to use them?
This is a GYM! People are supposed to workout hard and yell loud.
Well,ok,it doesn’t ahve to sound like WW3,but if you’re working those muscles hard you’re usually gonna yell or scream a bit.

A gym has the right to boss people around, tell them not to yell loud, and take away heavy weights but yet get away with playing boyband music in the gym…like that doesn’t annoy anyone who doesn’t have a 300 dollar Ipod and works out hard.
When they have the right to take away our rights they choose for us.

What gym do you train out of?

Jungle’s in Old Town Alexandria. I see you’re from MD, which part? We might not be too far apart.
Nards wrote:

FYI, studies have demonstrated that forceful exhalation (shouting, grunting, just letting out air really sharply, whatever) improves lifting ability. Moreover, forceful exhalation is absolutely necessary in some instances. For instance, in my experience, if I do not exhale forcefully as I rise from a squat clean but hold my breath instead, the pressure of the bar on my throat causes loss of sensation in my upper extremities and makes the jerk difficult.

On a practical level, anybody who says that grunting loudly through the concentric of a back squat doesn’t help just hasn’t tried it.

You are 100% correct. The exhalation makes the muscles tighten up and provide more power, as well as the act of yelling will psyche the mind up. This is a basic taught to all first day martial arts students. I have taught this principle to people from 4 years old to 80 years old for a very long time.

However, when in a commerical gym you do have to be courteous to the other people around you.

That is horrible. I got threatened numerous times at the first gym I trained at to not lift heavy weights. I had been making some serious progress on my deadlift and was setting 405 down on the floor many times a month. A few people complained about it and I got booted. I didn’t try to fight getting the boot either. I’m actually glad that I got kicked because I found Titanium Barbell as a result.

Now 405 is warm up weight…
this would be like someone at dunkin donuts threatens your ass for eating to many donuts thats simply insane ! gym = lift heavy weights or go home and do some pilates bullshit period !!
