Gym Near Disney?

I’m leaving next week for a 16 day trip to Orlando. We are staying at the Disney campground and will be visiting all the parks. I still need to train since this is half a month. Anyone know a decent gym that is easy to find, close to the park, and reasonably cheap for 2 weeks? Our days are going to be pretty packed so a gym that opens early or stays open really late would be convenient I could train while the family is relaxing.

Thanks in advance for your help

Also anyone know if Im gonna have any trouble getting protein powder/bars into the park? I dont think my body will appreciate standard junk for 2 weeks.

I don’t offhand, because I use to spend a lot more time in Florida than I do now.

BUT… have you ever been to Disney World?

I don’t know how long you’re staying there (all 16 days or not,) but WDW can be really physically exhausting. I know if I stay for only 5 days and do all parks at least once and them another day of doing shit I’ll walk up to 50 miles in a week. Just a heads-up.

Eat plenty and don’t kill yourself in the gym during the time.

Thanks for the advice I think out of the 16 days 2 are travel days and we are doing atleast 5 days in the park (all of which are free due to a military discount) I figure Ill try to hit the gym atleast 6 days throughout this time period and probably some quick Waterbury style full body routines. That should be enough to maintain and stave off any weight gain from vacationing.

If anyone has any good advice on how to keep up good training / nutrition habits when on vacation let me know. I know Ill have the ability to shop and cook my own food so at least 50% of my meals will be nutritionally sound. As for the rest well its a vacation… I figure some decent protein bars will help a lot .

5g of leucine with each meal

I never been there but I would expect to find a pansy ass family fitness center . I wouldnt look foward to find DB over 30lbs

I was down there for about 10 days this past summer. While I didn’t train at all for a week (you obviously will be there longer than I was), what I tried to do above all else, was keep some sort of meal cadence. Sure I ate some junk, but I still tried to get some sort of feeding every 4 hours or so. I carried a small bag with me that always had a few prot bars, some cashews, and a bottle of water.

(Try to enjoy yourself bro, you can minimize the damage, but you certainly won’t keep the same schedule you are at home)

Here’s a list of fitness facilities inside the actual Disney resorts:

Depending on how “hardcore” you approach your Disney vacation, you’ll be doing plenty of cardiovascular activity - there’s a lot of walking and standing.

There are some “healthy” options inside the park; however, you’ll notice that there are a lot more ice cream and soda stands than there are locations to buy “healthier” foods when in the parks.

Above all, unless you’re aiming for an IFBB pro card, two weeks off from training and proper nutrition won’t hurt you (plus you’ll be walking plenty if you go in with the attitude that “I have to do every ride”). Most important, when you said “we,” if you have little ones, then focus on their enjoyment and don’t worry about training. I’ve done Disney five times, and not once have I ever regretted not training or dieting when down there.

I went to orlando for 2 weeks and got back not too long ago!

I’d suggest you look at Google Earth for any near by gyms, but, I looked myself and there are none unless you want to travel to downtown orlando every morning.

The hotel I stayed at had DBs up to 50lbs, A double tower cable pulley machine and a Leg press.

Honestly, I trained like twice those two weeks for 30 minutes - I was sick for the first week I was there, and I was just on the go non-stop, walking around theme parks, shopping, going out at night etc.

I gained like half an inch on my calves from that holiday and my feet hurt like fuck.

I’d take a tub of protein with you, and have a couple of shakes on hand during the day, with a bag of nuts etc. You can always buy turkey legs when you are at the parks

All my planning with that stuff went out the window though because I spent the first three days in the hotel puking my guts out… Lost 14lbs on that holiday =/

I was there for two weeks with the family this summer. This was two weeks of rest and relaxation. You will walk a lot. I wouldn’t really be worried about finding time to train. Spend time with the family and leave it at that.

Food - we brought in a soft-sided cooler to every park with food and drinks. Saved us a lot of money. Never a problem. You do have to open it to have them check it over though. This solves your temptation to eat junk food. You can make good food choices wherever you go. Sure Disney has junk food, but they also have quality alternatives. I highly recommend going to the Bierhaus in Germany at Epcot.

Thanks alot guys for the input. Ill have plenty of water and protein bars on hand trying to eat about every 3 hours or so. I figure if I try to get 30-40 min of some kind of lifting every few days I should be ok. We have room in the Camper for me to store an oly bar and a few plates so Ill make that work. Im going to enjoy the time off and the food. I know we have reservations at a few nice places in the area. Ill just make sure I get enough protein and a few workouts on the trip.

Hey Dave,

I just got back from Disney on the 8th. The Jambo House of the Wilderness Lodge resort has a ‘fitness Center’ It’s not too far from the campground. Have Fun!!

Just to update anyone who gave me some input…

I got back about 10 days ago and I finally got caught up with everything enough to have some free time.

Food at Disney: Absolutely no problem bringing food in. I had snacks and protein bars that went through the bag check at Disney and Universal Studios no problem. I noticed other people who had glass containers had to ditch them.

As for workouts you guys were right about all the walking. 5 days at a Disney park (6 if you count Disney Quest) and a few days at Universal. I had my 18lbs. son to carry around and push in a stroller too which added a lot. I took an Olympic bar, 2 45lbs plates and 2 25lbs plates. I did a few full body workouts on the concrete behind the RV on the warmer days when I had time the only thing I missed was a pull up bar. With all the walking I never felt I needed extra cardio.

As for my body weight I generally live a low carb diet but I ate a ton of whatever I wanted on vacation. I had appetizers, dessert, and drinks with every meal. I did manage to make sure I ate 5+ times a day and got plenty of protein too. I took lots of protein bars ( I took muscle milk, muscle milk light, and VPX zero impact). I have to say the VPX bars are my favorite. The muscle milk bars just taste like snickers and Im not a huge fan of sweets. The muscle milk light bars are a waste they are just mini versions of the full bars. I kept fish oil, green tea, and a multi vitamin on hand to cover nutritional bases and keep my waistline in check somewhat. I gained about 10lbs over the 16 day vacation and I ate a ton! Its been 10 days since I have been back and eating reasonably and Ive lost it all. I’m sure it was just water weight from going off my low carb diet. Only negative effect of the vacation eating is now I have cravings for junk food that Ive never had a problem with before.

In the gym I didn’t lose much. Although over 16 days I only got in about 4 actual workouts my strength is fine. First week back in the gym I worked up to 325 x 3 bench , 385 x 3 squat, and 455 x 3 deadlift thats not bad for half a month off. I did notice on my higher rep sets I struggled a lot more. I also am still working up to the amount of volume I was doing before vacation. My cardio has gone down, but my leg endurance is great from all that walking.

My advice for anyone going on a similar vacation would be to wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water with you, and embrace the time off.
