Gym Etiquette Question

Well that’s me out of ideas - anyone know how this started? I just can’t actually see the point of curling in the squat rack?

I never have to worry about SRC (squat rack curls) here in Taiwan. Most of the guys here are such preening ponies that they can’t even curl 45 lbs. even though all they do is biceps and smith machine incline presses. So, since they can’t curl 45 lbs, this precludes them from ever needing to do SRC.

Until they figure out that in some squat racks if you place the EZ curlbar just right it won’t fall.

I’ve had success with this VERY quote. Emphasize, SQUAT RACK !!!

I’ve had the same problem in the same kind of gym. Power rack curls are sickeningly common in my gym.

Politely asking the two gay guys doing curls in the rack didn’t help. (The other rack was occupied by a guy actually squatting.) I explained that there were many other places to curl, but no other places to squat. They suggested that I should do squats with dumbbells. I explained that it wasn’t really feasible. They still refused. I rolled my eyes and left.

Then I explained the situation to gym management. Not to get kick them out of the rack, but rather to set some gym policy. This way I build a record, and hopefully eventually get someone to put up a sign that says: No curling in the rack when others are waiting.

I haven’t had that problem recently, though.

Tap the little curl monkey on the shoulder and politely tell him to move out of the squat rack.

If you are ignored, just start setting up the rack around him.

When he asks what you’re doing, just tell him that you asked politely now your going to take what is rightfully yours and if he doesn’t move you’ll use him as a warm up.

This normally works.

monday is typically the best at my gym for squats…or friday night/sunday afternoon. Just gotta go when its not convenient for everyone else

What I was going to say has already been said but here it is again. Monday nights were always when I did squats since everyone was busy setting PRs on the benchpress. It also seems that curlers most often use the squat rack and not the power rack so there’s something to consider if your gym has a power rack. I still had to tolerate a few idiots though, which is why I started training in my garage. Which brings up another observation already touched on. Since you drive a 100k+ sports car, surely you could afford a well equipped home gym. I drive a 20k Jeep, have a kickass setup, listen to music I want to hear and never have to wait on anything.

doing curls in a squat almost automatically qualifies you for douche bag standing. The only exception to the rule is a specific need for heavy straight bar curls, when there is no short olympic straight bar in your gym. So I put the official P of “person doing curls in squat rack NOT being a douche” at =~ .001
