I like John Petrucci. “As I Am” is also up there with one of my most liked solos. The tension and build up through out the solo is amazing.
I like most of what everyone has posted in terms of talent. However, I dislike some of the styles.
Solo starts about 4:55
I really do like Buckethead, but I’ve always felt that it’s too bad that 95% of the stuff he turns out sounds like computer-generated garbage.
When he sticks to more melodic styles (his Electric Tears album, for example) he really is nice to listen to. His work on Chinese Democracy highlights this, as well.

I hear ya. Although I usually find something interesting/humorous in everything he plays, I can’t listen to the pyrotechnic stuff for more than a few minutes without getting a headache. If I’m gonna listen to BH, it’s probably going to be one of the more melodic/emo rekkids. Pepper’s Ghost is going right now.
Great thread, I guess I know what I’ll be listening to tomorrow!
And now for my humble offerings:
B.

You know how you guys feel when people who know nothing about working out talk about how jacked Brad Pitt was in fight club?
As a musician, I get that exact same feeling reading who you think are “amazing”.
You’re pretty fucking ridiculous. There’s a difference between saying Brad Pitt is jacked, something that can clearly be measured and quantified, and saying that such-and-such a guitarist is amazing as that’s purely based on personal opinion.
Somebody might not like jazz, so to him, Django might not be all that amazing.
I’m saying that it’s amusing, as someone who is well versed within music, to read people who are not so well versed think are amazing. You don’t get this?
I’m not talking about your right to have an opinion of someone.
And your comment about Django not being amazing because of the listeners interpretation, well, that’s like saying Pytagoras wasn’t amazing because you aren’t into math.
And for the record, skill can certainly be quantified.

Amazing is defined as “causing amazement, great wonder, or surprise” so in that regard someone being amazing is a matter of personal opinion. Some people may listen to Django or Satch or whoever an not find them amazing.
Regardless of all that, I think Django is indeed amazing. Mostly because of his skill, there are few who can pull off the things he did with such a clean tone.
I’m surprised no one posted anything from these guys. Chet Atkins & Les Paul
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
Disturbed - Stricken, I like how well this one fits the song.
So yeah, my tastes are all over the place.

I get what you’re saying but you’re still going about it the wrong way. Yes a musician is more versed in appreciating the nuances of other skilled musicians work while those who are not would rather just listen to something that they find to be an appealing sound. There’s nothing wrong with that, most musicians make music tempered to a specific audience in the first place. But arguing about whether one guitarist is better than the next when you are comparing two completely different genres and fan bases is just plain retarded. I’ve had long discussions about this very subject with many who are fine musicians themselves. It usually turns out on agreeing that at that level that the musicians being discussed have reached, they can pretty much play each others music. That’s just how virtuosity is. It’s the personal flavor that each musician brings to the table which cannot be compared, because it’s like setting Megan fox next to Sandra Bullock. Both are reasonably delicious in their own regards but still have different flavors to them. Just using your previous post as an example, i’m sure if Petrucci cut off some of his fingers and played nothing but gypsy jazz for his entire career he’d be just as well renowned in the genre as Django. It’s a pointless argument that has been brought up too many times over something that is just too subjective to opinion. This is why I rarely talk about music with anyone.

Oh, I agree with you, but I get ticked off when I see Angus getting labeled as “amazing”, and “so talented”. It’s an insult to the ones who really are talented. Not that Angus ain’t a solid player in ACDC, he is.
